Best Sony NEX-5N Memory Card

Two different types of memory cards will work with the Sony NEX-5N. Sony PRO-HG Duo and PRO Duo can be used in addition to SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards.

You'll find just one memory card slot in the NEX-5N. You'll have to pick between an SD or PRO Duo memory card.

Sony is the owner of the PRO Duo memory card format. SD memory cards have had a wider adoption that PRO Duo cards because SD memory cards are appreciably faster in addition to being less expensive.

Pressed for time? My advice is to get this SD card to use with the NEX-5N:

SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I SDHC Memory Card

SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SDHC Memory Card

64GB or larger cards are not compatible with the camera.

Best SD Cards

High-quality producers of SD cards include Lexar, SanDisk, and PNY. The more reliable memory cards I have used are the SanDisk Extreme Pro SD cards.

You do not need to purchase a card made by SanDisk for your Sony NEX-5N. Look for SD cards with impressive names. That will mean you get fast read/write rates, dust resistance, and more professional features.

I have not had errors with Lexar Professional or PNY Elite Performance cards.

The problems I have encountered with SD cards has been when I have used inexpensive no-name brands. Being cheap increases the chance of data corruption or memory card errors.

If you would like to spend less, don't buy a generic card. You will be better off buying a high-quality SD card with a reduced storage capacity.

Sony NEX-5N SD Card Compatibility

SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards can be used by the Sony NEX-5N. Use a memory card to get the maximum overall performance out of the camera.

The newest SDUC memory cards are not supported by the NEX-5N.

Currently, there are four different types of Secure Digital (SD) memory cards. More recent memory card specs add tech that provides for increased memory capacity and improved data transfer speeds.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - 128MB to 2GB.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - 4GB to 32GB.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - 64GB to 2TB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - 4TB to 128TB.

SD Card Speed

The speed rating of an SD memory card is determined by the sequential write and read speeds. SD memory card continuous write speed is essential for continuous shooting and video.

A slow memory card can cause a drop in the number of continuous photos the Sony NEX-5N can capture. This is because the buffer in the camera is not able to write data to the SD card quickly enough.

When recording video, a slow SD card can cause a sudden end to the recording. The video file might also be corrupted. If you intend to record video, it is critical the memory card you use meets the required minimum continuous write speed for video.

Card read speed is nice to have for file transfers to a computer or laptop. If you have cards that are full, a memory card with a fast read speed will cut down on the time it takes the transfer to finish.

Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
10 inside of a C showing that the SD card is Class 10.

The Sony NEX-5N should be used with a minimum of a Class 4 SD card.

The sustained write speed is what establishes the Class rating that an SD memory card receives. Class 10 is the highest rating which is given to cards that have a write speed greater than 10MB/s.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s or faster

Every name-brand SD card that you can buy will be rated Class 10. You can check the class rating of a card by looking for a number inside of a C on the label.

Ultra High Speed (UHS)

Example of an SD memory card with a UHS-I rating.
This card has a UHS-I rating. UHS-II and UHS-III cards will have II or III, respectively.

The Ultra High Speed (UHS) bus is built into SDHC, SDXC, and SDUC cards. The UHS bus makes it possible for increased data transfer rates.

There are 3 different specifications. They are UHS-I, UHS-II, and UHS-III.

Look at the front of the card to figure out the rating of an SD card. If there is a Roman numeral I, II, or III on the front of the SD memory card, that is going to be the Rating of your SD card.

  • UHS-I - Maximum transfer rate of 104 MB/s
  • UHS-II - Maximum transfer rate of 312 MB/s
  • UHS-III - Maximum transfer rate of 624 MB/s

Sony NEX-5N PRO Duo Card Compatibility

One PRO-HG Duo or PRO Duo memory cards can be used in the Sony NEX-5N. PRO-HG signifies the memory card may have read speeds up to 50MB/s and a 15MB/s minimum write speed.

PRO Duo cards are in most cases double the price of an SD card. I would not recommend purchasing a PRO Duo card to use with your NEX-5N as a result of the difference in price.

  • 8GB - 2,320 images
  • 16GB - 4,640 images
  • 32GB - 9,280 images
