Best Sony NEX-5R Memory Card

The Sony NEX-5R can use two different kinds of memory cards. SDXC, SDHC, and SD memory cards can be used as well as Sony PRO-HG Duo and PRO Duo cards.

The camera only has only one card slot. You will need to make a choice between an SD or PRO Duo card.

PRO Duo memory cards are a proprietary card format held by Sony. SD memory cards have had a wider adoption that PRO Duo cards because SD cards are noticeably faster as well as being cheaper.

Need a card now? My unbiased recommendation is this SD card paired with NEX-5R:

SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I SDHC Memory Card

SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SDHC Memory Card

64GB or larger cards are not compatible with the camera.

Best SD Cards

Top-quality manufacturers of SD cards include SanDisk, Lexar, and PNY. The best SD cards I have owned have been the SanDisk Extreme Pro memory cards.

That does not mean you need to purchase a card made by SanDisk for your Sony NEX-5R. Look for memory cards with impressive names. That will ensure you get fast read/write rates, water resistance, and more features.

I have not run into errors with PNY Elite Performance or Lexar Professional cards.

The problems I have encountered with cards has been when cheap no-name brands were used. A low-cost card adds to the possibility of card errors or corrupted data.

If you would like to spend less, don't buy a generic card. You will avoid problems by purchasing a professional-quality memory card with a reduced storage capacity.

Sony NEX-5R SD Card Compatibility

SDXC, SDHC, and SD memory cards are usable with the Sony NEX-5R. Use a SD memory card to get the best performance from the camera.

The newest SDUC cards won't work with the NEX-5R.

In total, there are four distinct specifications of SD (Secure Digital) memory cards. Newer memory card specs add more tech that allows for increased storage space and greatly improve transfer rates.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - 128MB to 2GB.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - 4GB to 32GB.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - 64GB to 2TB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - 4TB to 128TB.

SD Card Speed

Speed ratings of an SD card is based on the sequential read and write speeds. Card speed is very important for clearing the camera buffer for continuous shooting in addition to recording video.

Slows SD cards can decrease the number of continuous images the Sony NEX-5R can take. This is because the camera's buffer will not be able to write data to the SD card fast enough.

With video, a slow SD card can cause a sudden end to shooting. The video file might also end up being corrupted. If you intend to shoot video, it is crucial the memory card you use meets the minimum requirements of the camera.

Card read speed is nice to have for transferring files to a computer. If you have cards that are full, a card with a fast read speed will cut down on the transfer time.

Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
10 inside of a C showing that the SD card is Class 10.

The Sony NEX-5R requires a minimum of an SD card with a Class 4 rating.

The sustained write speed determines the Class rating for an SD card. Class 10 is the highest rating which is given to cards with a write speed greater than 10MB/s.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s or faster

Every name-brand card that you can get will have a Class 10 rating. To check the class rating of an SD card, look for a number inside of a C on the label.

Ultra High Speed (UHS)

Example of an SD memory card with a UHS-I rating.
This card has a UHS-I rating. UHS-II and UHS-III cards will have II or III, respectively.

The Ultra High Speed (UHS) bus is found in SDHC, SDXC, and SDUC cards. UHS allows offers a way to increase file transfer rates.

Three separate versions exist. They are UHS-I, UHS-II, and UHS-III.

To find the UHS rating of an SD memory card, look at the front of the card. If the card has UHS, a Roman numeral I, II, or III will be on the memory card label.

  • UHS-I - Maximum transfer rate of 104 MB/s
  • UHS-II - Maximum transfer rate of 312 MB/s
  • UHS-III - Maximum transfer rate of 624 MB/s

Sony NEX-5R PRO Duo Card Compatibility

The Sony NEX-5R may use a single PRO Duo or PRO-HG Duo memory cards. PRO-HG signifies the memory card may have read speeds up to 50MB/s and a 15MB/s minimum write speed.

You will need to hand over more to purchase a PRO Duo memory card than an equivalent SD memory card. I would not recommend purchasing a Sony PRO Duo card for use in a NEX-5R on account of the total price difference.

Image Capacity

Below is an approximate estimation of how many large JPEG images you can expect to store on each size of SD card.

  • 4GB - 1,160 images
  • 8GB - 2,320 images
  • 16GB - 4,640 images
  • 32GB - 9,280 images
