Best Nikon Coolpix Memory Cards

The Nikon Coolpix P500 is able to use SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards. Continuous shooting and video need SD cards with high card write speeds.

The SD card you go with has a considerable impact on the functionality of your camera.

Want to skip the tech specs? This is my recommendation on the SD memory card to use in your Nikon Coolpix P500:

SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB UHS-I SD Card

SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SD Card

  • Best value for the money.
  • Capacities from 32 GB to 2TB.
  • Transfer speeds up to 170 MB/s.
  • Class 10 & UHS-I
  • Temperature Proof, Water Proof, Shock Proof, and X-ray Proof.

Best SD Cards

In the time since the launch of Nikon Coolpix P500, the price of memory cards has come way down.

Since prices are so affordable, it is not going to make sense to get anything but a professional-quality SD memory card.

SanDisk Extreme Pro, Lexar Professional, and PNY Elite Performance cards are great. I have not endured data errors or a card break with those SD memory cards.

Every single complication I have had has been with generic unbranded memory cards. Attempting to save a buck is not worth the cost if your Coolpix P500 will not function properly.

A great way to spend less money is to grab a smaller capacity card from a high-quality manufacturer. By doing this, you'll know your images are safe on the card.

Nikon Coolpix P500 SD Card Compatibility

You are limited to using SDXC, SDHC, and SD cards in the Nikon Coolpix P500. For best performance, be certain that your camera has the latest firmware installed.

The newest SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity) memory cards, are not compatible with the Coolpix P500.

There are four separate specifications of Secure Digital (SD) cards that you should know. SD cards can be told apart from the capactiy of the card.

  • SD (Secure Digital) - 128MB to 2GB.
  • SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) - 4GB to 32GB.
  • SDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity) - 64GB to 2TB.
  • SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity) - 4TB to 128TB.

Speed, Class, & UHS Ratings

Card Speed

The speed rating of an SD memory card is based on the continuous write and read transfer speeds of the card. Memory card write speed is important for video and continuous shooting.

A slow memory card can cause a reduction in the number of continuous images the Nikon Coolpix P500 can capture. This is due to the camera's buffer not being able to write to the card quickly enough.

When shooting video, a slow memory card can cause recording to end. The video file might also end up being corrupted. If you are going to record video, it is important the card you use meets the minimum requirements of the Coolpix P500.

Card read speed is important for file transfers to a computer. If you are filling up cards with images or video, a card with a fast transfer speed will cut down on the transfer time.

Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
The 10 inside of the C means the card is Class 10.

The sustained write speed of a card is represented by the Class rating. Memory cards that have a write speed of 10MB/s are rated as Class 10.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s or faster

Every brand of SD card that you can buy online will receive a Class 10 rating. To determine the class rating of a SD card, search for a number inside of the C on the sticker.

Ultra High Speed (UHS)

Example of an SD memory card with a UHS-I rating.
The UHS rating of a card can be determined by a Roman numeral I, II, or III on the label of the card.

The Ultra High Speed (UHS) bus is often found in SDHC, SDXC, and SDUC memory cards. UHS allows for faster data transfer rates.

There are three different versions. They are called UHS-I, UHS-II, and UHS-III.

Look at the front of the memory card to determine the UHS rating of a SD card. If there is a Roman numeral I, II, or III on the front of the SD memory card, that is the rating of the SD memory card.

  • UHS-I - Maximum transfer rate of 104 MB/s
  • UHS-II - Maximum transfer rate of 312 MB/s
  • UHS-III - Maximum transfer rate of 624 MB/s
