Best Nikon Coolpix Memory Cards

SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards can be put to use in the Nikon Coolpix L820. An SD memory card with fast write speeds is critical for burst shooting and video.

The overall performance of your camera can be decreased by using the wrong SD memory card.

Want to skip the technical details? Listed below is my recommendation on the memory card to use with the Nikon Coolpix L820:

SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB UHS-I SD Card

SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SD Card

  • Best value for the money.
  • Capacities from 32 GB to 2TB.
  • Transfer speeds up to 170 MB/s.
  • Class 10 & UHS-I
  • Temperature Proof, Water Proof, Shock Proof, and X-ray Proof.

Best SD Cards

SD cards have greatly reduced in cost since the launch of the Nikon Coolpix L820.

With costs becoming quite cheap, it will not make sense to choose anything besides a professional-quality card.

The best SD memory cards I have owned have been the SanDisk Extreme Pro, Lexar Professional, and PNY Elite Performance models. I have never suffered from a card become inoperable or unusable data with any of those memory cards.

Each and every trouble I have experienced has been due to low-cost unbranded SD memory cards. Attempting to save around a buck is not worth the cost if your Coolpix L820 is going to have problems.

A smart way to spend less money is to find a smaller capacity card from a high-quality company. By making that choice, you will know your photos are safe on the SD card.

Nikon Coolpix L820 SD Card Compatibility

You can only use SDXC, SDHC, and SD memory cards with the Nikon Coolpix L820. Check to be sure that your camera is using the most recent firmware.

The newest SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity) cards, will not be usable in the Coolpix L820.

There are four separate versions of Secure Digital (SD) cards that you need to know about. They are divided by storage size.

  • SD (Secure Digital) - 128MB to 2GB.
  • SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) - 4GB to 32GB.
  • SDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity) - 64GB to 2TB.
  • SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity) - 4TB to 128TB.

Listed here is a quick approximation of just how many large JPEGs photographs you should expect to fit on a SD memory card:

  • 16GB - 4,640 images
  • 32GB - 9,280 images
  • 64GB - 18,560 images
  • 128GB - 37,120 images

Speed, Class, & UHS Ratings

Card Speed

Speed ratings of an SD card is based on the sequential write and read transfer speeds of the card. The speed of a card is important for continuous shooting and video.

A slow card can cause a drop in the number of continuous frames the Nikon Coolpix L820 can capture. This is because the camera's buffer is not able to write to the SD card quickly enough.

When shooting video, a slow memory card can cause recording to end. The video file might also be corrupted. If you intend to record video, it is important the SD card you use meets the minimum requirements of the Coolpix L820.

Card read speed is nice to have for transferring files to a computer. If you are filling up cards with images or video, a SD card with a fast transfer speed will cut down on the amount of time it takes the transfer to finish.

Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
The 10 inside of the C means the card is Class 10.

An SD card receives a Class rating in line with its continuous write speed. Memory cards that have a write speed of at least 10MB/s will be rated Class 10.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s or faster

Every brand-name SD memory card that you can get today will be Class 10. To locate the class rating of a memory card, search for a number inside of the C on the front.

Ultra High Speed (UHS)

Example of an SD memory card with a UHS-I rating.
The UHS rating of a card can be determined by a Roman numeral I, II, or III on the label of the card.

The Ultra High Speed bus (UHS) is built into SDUC, SDXC, and SDHC memory cards. The UHS bus makes it possible for faster file transfer rates.

Three separate versions have been created. They are called UHS-I, UHS-II, and UHS-III.

You can determine the rating of a SD card by checking the front of the SD card. If the card has UHS, a Roman numeral I, II, or III can be seen on the memory card label.

  • UHS-I - Maximum transfer rate of 104 MB/s
  • UHS-II - Maximum transfer rate of 312 MB/s
  • UHS-III - Maximum transfer rate of 624 MB/s
