Pentax SD Memory Card Compatibility

The Pentax K-S2 is able to use SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards. Fast write speeds are a critical factor for continuous shooting and video.

You can greatly decrease the overall performance of your camera by using the wrong memory card.

Just want a card that will work? Listed below is my suggestion on the memory card to use in your Pentax K-S2:

SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB UHS-I SD Card

SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SD Card

  • Best value for the money.
  • Capacities from 32 GB to 2TB.
  • Transfer speeds up to 170 MB/s.
  • Class 10 & UHS-I
  • Temperature Proof, Water Proof, Shock Proof, and X-ray Proof.

Best SD Cards

Since the intro of Pentax K-S2, the price of SD memory cards has dropped.

Since costs are quite cheap, it does not make financial sense to get anything but a professional-level card.

The best memory cards I have used have been the SanDisk Extreme Pro, Lexar Professional, and PNY Elite Performance models. I have not endured a card to become inoperable or data errors with any of those cards.

Each and every hassle I have had has been due to generic unbranded SD memory cards. Seeking to save around a dollar is not worth it if your K-S2 will not function as expected.

To cut costs, find a lower capacity SD card from a quality manufacturer. By making that choice, you will not have to fret about the photos stored on the SD card.

Pentax K-S2 SD Card Compatibility

Only SDXC, SDHC, and SD cards can be used by the Pentax K-S2. Check to be sure that you have the most recently released firmware installed on your camera for the best compatibility.

The newest SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity) cards aren't going to be able to be used in the K-S2.

You need to be aware of the four kinds of Secure Digital (SD) cards that can be purchased. They are split up by their size.

  • SD (Secure Digital) - 128MB to 2GB.
  • SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) - 4GB to 32GB.
  • SDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity) - 64GB to 2TB.
  • SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity) - 4TB to 128TB.

Speed, Class, & UHS Ratings

Card Speed

The speed rating of an SD card is based on the continuous write and read speeds of the card. The transfer speed of an SD memory card is important for video in addition to continuous shooting.

Slows SD cards can decrease the number of continuous images the Pentax K-S2 can take. This is due to the camera's buffer not being able to write to the SD card quickly enough.

When shooting video, a slow SD card can cause an unexpected end to shooting. The video file may also be corrupted. If you intend to shoot video, it is essential the memory card you use meets the required continuous write speed for video.

Card read speed is nice to have for transferring files to a computer. If you have cards that are full, an SD card with a fast read speed will cut down on the time it takes the transfer to complete.

Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
The 10 inside of the C means the card is Class 10.

The Class rating of a card is related to the continuous write speed. Cards that have a minimum write speed of 10MB/s are labeled as Class 10.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s or faster

Every brand of SD memory card that you can find online will receive a Class 10 rating. To discover the class rating of an SD card, try to find a number inside of the C on the front.

Ultra High Speed (UHS)

Example of an SD memory card with a UHS-I rating.
The UHS rating of a card can be determined by a Roman numeral I, II, or III on the label of the card.

The Ultra High Speed (UHS) bus is found in SDUC, SDXC, and SDHC memory cards. The UHS bus makes it possible to provide a way to improve data transfer rates.

Three different specs have been made. They are called UHS-I, UHS-II, and UHS-III.

Look at the front of the SD card to figure out the rating of a card. The presence of a Roman numeral I, II, or III on the front of the card, that is going to be the rating of your SD card.

  • UHS-I - Maximum transfer rate of 104 MB/s
  • UHS-II - Maximum transfer rate of 312 MB/s
  • UHS-III - Maximum transfer rate of 624 MB/s
