Pentax SD Memory Card Compatibility

The Pentax K-r may use SDXC, SDHC, and SD memory cards. An SD card with fast enough write speeds is critical for burst shooting and video.

You can greatly reduce the functionality of your camera by using the wrong SD memory card.

Don't want the tech jargon? Below is my suggestion on the SD memory card to get for the Pentax K-r:

SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB UHS-I SD Card

SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SD Card

  • Best value for the money.
  • Capacities from 32 GB to 2TB.
  • Transfer speeds up to 170 MB/s.
  • Class 10 & UHS-I
  • Temperature Proof, Water Proof, Shock Proof, and X-ray Proof.

Best SD Cards

Like all things tech, the cost of SD memory cards has greatly fallen since the release of the Pentax K-r.

Seeing as how inexpensive the cost is, it would not be cost-effective to choose anything other than a professional-quality SD memory card.

The best SD cards I have owned have been the SanDisk Extreme Pro, Lexar Professional, and PNY Elite Performance models. I have never encountered unusable data or a card physically fail with those cards.

All of the complications I have had have been when using cheap unbranded SD cards. Attempting to save a buck is not worth it if your K-r will not operate in the right way.

To cut costs, purchase a lower storage capacity card from a quality company. Because of this, you will not have to be concerned about the photographs stored on the SD memory card.

Pentax K-r SD Card Compatibility

Only SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards can be used by the Pentax K-r. For best performance, ensure your camera has the most up to date firmware installed.

The newest cards, SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity), will not be usable in the K-r.

Four different versions of Secure Digital (SD) cards that you need to be familiar with. They are divided by their storage capacity.

  • SD (Secure Digital) - 128MB to 2GB.
  • SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) - 4GB to 32GB.
  • SDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity) - 64GB to 2TB.
  • SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity) - 4TB to 128TB.

Listed below is a fast approximation of the number of max-quality JPEGs shots you can expect to fit on a card:

  • 16GB - 4,640 images
  • 32GB - 9,280 images
  • 64GB - 18,560
  • 128GB - 37,120

Speed, Class, & UHS Ratings

Card Speed

Speed ratings of an SD memory card is dependant on the continuous read and write speeds. SD card continuous write speed is critical for video as well as continuous shooting.

A slow memory card can cause a drop in the number of continuous photos the Pentax K-r can capture. This is due to the camera's buffer not being able to write data to the memory card fast enough.

With video, a slow SD card can cause an unexpected end to shooting. The video file may also end up being corrupted. If you intend to shoot video, it is important the SD card you use meets the required minimum write speed for video.

Card read speed is nice to have for file transfers to a computer or laptop. If you have cards that are full, a card with a fast read speed will decrease the transfer time.

Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
The 10 inside of the C means the card is Class 10.

The continuous write speed of a memory card is the factor that determines the Class rating. Memory cards that have a write speed of 10MB/s will be rated Class 10.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s or faster

Every brand of memory card that you can purchase today will receive a Class 10 rating. You can check the class rating of an SD card by looking for a number inside of the C on the sticker.

Ultra High Speed (UHS)

Example of an SD memory card with a UHS-I rating.
The UHS rating of a card can be determined by a Roman numeral I, II, or III on the label of the card.

The Ultra High Speed (UHS) bus is a feature often found in SDUC, SDXC, and SDHC memory cards. The UHS bus allows for increased data transfer rates.

Three separate versions have been created. They are called UHS-I, UHS-II, and UHS-III.

You can find the UHS rating of an SD card by examining the front of the memory card. If the card has UHS, a Roman numeral I, II, or III can be seen on the label.

  • UHS-I - Maximum transfer rate of 104 MB/s
  • UHS-II - Maximum transfer rate of 312 MB/s
  • UHS-III - Maximum transfer rate of 624 MB/s
