Panasonic GF2 Memory Card Compatibility

Panasonic GF2 SD Memory Card Compatibility

The Panasonic GF2 requires SD memory cards. 32GB is the biggest capacity SD card that is compatible with the GF2.

MultiMediaCards (MMC) can also be used. However, they are no longer made. If you have one, you can use it. If you do not have one, do not buy one, they will cost more than an SD card.

SD memory cards labeled as SDXC or SDUC won’t work in the GF2. These cards will be 64GB or bigger, so they are simple to avoid.

The SDHC format was announced in 2006. All 32GB cards that are currently being produced will have almost identical performance. You cannot go wrong buying the cheapest class 10 name brand card. At the time of writing this, the PNY Elite 32GB SD memory card has the best price.

Down below are memory cards that are compatible in the GF2. With any of the cards below, you won’t have to be concerned about memory card errors or reduced capabilities.

Best SD Cards

Be sure to choose a card from a brand name with a strong reputation, such as SanDisk or Lexar. Avoid ordering cards from cut-rate no-name brand names.

Low-cost cards are more inclined to experience file corruption, meaning that you will lose all of your photos contained on the card. A minuscule amount of decrease in price is not worth the decline of build quality.

The smart way to save a little money is to buy a card with a smaller capacity. They should be a little bit cheaper and you won’t need to stress out about the SD card having data failure.

Do not forget, SD card failures are not common. Only a couple of cards have become corrupted out of the considerable number I have owned over many years. Both memory cards were pre-owned no-name cards that were bundled with the purchase of used digital point & shoots.

Panasonic GF2 SD Card Compatibility

The Panasonic GF2 uses SD memory cards. There are currently 4 different specifications of Secure Digital (SD) memory cards. Each new memory card specification raises the max storage capacity and read/write speeds when compared with the earlier specification.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

The card reader in the Panasonic GF2 is only compatible with the first and second SD card specs. SDXC or SDUC memory cards are not going to function correctly.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the GF2.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB and are also compatible with the GF2.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.

SD Card Contacts

Trying to use an SD memory card that is 64GB or larger in the GF2 will result in the digital camera to show an error message.

Get a memory card with a storage capacity of 32GB or less to avoid the error.

If you have an SD memory card that is 32GB or a smaller capacity, and it is not working, format the memory card in the camera.

Speed, Class, & Capacity

SD Card Image Capacity

The following is a quick estimation of how many large JPEGs you can expect to keep on an SD memory card.

  • 4GB - 1920 images
  • 8GB - 3840 images
  • 16GB - 7680 images
  • 32GB - 15360 images

Memory Card Speed

Speed ratings for SD memory cards are established by the sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the card is important in cases where many photos need to be written to the memory card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

SD Card Speed Class

The Class speed rating of an SD memory card is dependant on the sustained write speed of the card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the card can sustain a write speed of more than 2MB per second.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s

The top rating a card can obtain is Class 10. There are cards that are substantially faster than 10MB/s. Those cards use other solutions, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), which have a different rating criteria.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.

MultiMediaCard Compatibility

SanDisk and Siemens AG introduced to the market the MultiMediaCard specification in 1997. MMC cards are similar in dimensions to an SD card, but they are a little bit thinner.

Only the earliest 2 versions of MMC cards are going to work in the Panasonic GF2. Suitable memory cards will be branded as MMCplus or MMC. Later versions are not going to function correctly in the Panasonic GF2

Steer clear of purchasing an MMC memory card. Suitable MMC cards for the GF2 are not at present being produced. Consequently, they are unaffordable and quite challenging to come across pre-owned.

Conclusion

Buy an SD memory card for the Panasonic GF2 based on price. An expensive card isn’t going to improve performance. As long as it is a speed class 10 card, you will be fine. My recommendation is the PNY Elite 32GB SD memory card.
