The Nikon D40 was released in 2006 for None for the camera body only. It was bundled with the Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor kit lens for $599.95.
Those prices included a EN-EL9 battery and MH-23 charger. A SD memory card was not included. The maximum capacity SD card the D40 can use is 32GB.
The D40 has a 6.1 megapixel APS-C sized sensor and is compatible with Nikon DX and FX F-mount lenses.
It was replaced by the Nikon D3000.

Third party batteries are available that are much less expensive than an OEM Nikon battery. Even better is that newer third party batteries have built-in USB charging. That’s good because the D40 cannot charge the battery via the USB port.
The USB port is for slow data transfer only. A memory card reader will be the fastest and they are usable by phones.
