Vintage Macro Lenses

Vintage macro lenses are some of the most useful manual focus lenses. When the macro lenses are stopped down, the image quality is excellent.

With many of them being manual focus lenses, there is little that can go wrong with them. There is a decent supply of them on the used market and the value to performance ratio for the majority of lenses for macro photography is difficult to beat.

Lens adapters are inexpensive so they can easily be used on any interchangeable lens mirrorless cameras. They will also work well on compatible DSLR or film SLR cameras.

Sigma 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens Review

Quality problems or low sales have made this lens rare. Likely both because I'm always surprised to find old Sigma lenses that are in usable condition. My copy has a Nikon F mount, but it was made with other camera mounts. Image quality is similar to other macro lenses from the late 1970s and 1980s. […]

Olympus OM 50mm f/3.5 Zuiko Auto-Macro Lens Review

The Olympus 50mm f/3.5 OM-System Zuiko Auto-Macro lens is a well built lens. Having the aperture located at the front of the lens makes it easy to adjust when adapted to a mirrorless camera. Canon FD 100mm f/4 Macro Lens Review

The Canon FD 100mm f/4 macro lens is front heavy and only goes to 1:2 magnification. Despite that, the lens is sharp when stopped down to f/8. A 50mm extension tube is needed to get to 1:1 magnification. Adapting the lens to a mirrorless camera body adds even more extension. For the lens to be […]

The Nikon Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 PC is the 5th of the 7 versions of the lens. There are two notable changes in this version. First, the lens has a improved coating, designated by the "C." Second, the aperture ring was changed to a scalloped style that makes it easier to grip. An issue to look […]

Yashica 55mm f/2.8 ML Macro Lens Review

The Yashica 55mm f/2.8 ML macro lens is well constructed, sharp, and has little distortion. Compared to other vintage macro lenses, the only standout feature is that it is expensive. A 27mm extension tube is needed for 1:1 magnification. However, 90-105mm macro lenses are a better choice for 1:1 because they have larger working distances. […]

Nikon Micro Nikkor AF 60mm f/2.8 Lens Review

The 60mm f/2.8 Micro Nikkor was released as a replacement for the unpopular and short-lived, 55mm f/2.8 AF Micro Nikkor. The autofocus in the lens is driven by a screw drive motor built into some Nikon camera bodies. Nikon has been phasing the motors out of entry-level DSLRs for several years. Camera bodies such as […]
