Best SD Cards

Like all things tech, the price of SD cards has greatly fallen since the release of the Fujifilm X-Pro1.

Since prices are quite low, it will not make financial sense to choose anything other than a professional-level card.

The best SD memory cards I own have been the SanDisk Extreme Pro, Lexar Professional, and PNY Elite Performance models. I have under no circumstances endured unusable data or a card failure with those SD cards.

Every last problem I have had has been with no-name unbranded cards. Trying to save a little bit of money isn't worth the cost if your X-Pro1 is likely to experience trouble.

A great way to spend less money is to opt for a lower capacity SD memory card from a quality company. That way, you'll know your images are safe and sound on the memory card.

The memory cards that are compatible with the Fujifilm X-Pro1 are SDXC, SDHC, and SD. Check to be sure you have the most recent firmware installed on your camera for the best functionality.

The newest cards, SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity), can not be used in the X-Pro1.

You need to understand the 4 kinds of Secure Digital (SD) cards that can be bought. You can tell them apart by looking at their storage size.

  • SD (Secure Digital) - 128MB to 2GB.
  • SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) - 4GB to 32GB.

Speed, Class, & UHS Ratings

Card Speed

The speed rating of an SD card is based on the continuous write and read transfer speeds. Card continuous write speed is critical for continuous shooting and video.

A slow SD card can cause a decrease in the number of continuous frames the Fujifilm X-Pro1 can capture. This is because the camera's buffer will not be able to write to the memory card fast enough.

With video, a slow memory card can cause an unexpected end to recording. The video file might also be corrupted. If you intend to shoot video, it is crucial the memory card you use meets the required continuous write speed for video.

Card read speed is important for transferring files to a computer. If you are filling up cards with images or video, a memory card with a fast read speed will decrease the transfer time.

Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
The 10 inside of the C means the card is Class 10.

The continuous write speed of a card is represented by the Class rating. Memory cards that have a write speed of at least 10MB/s are rated as Class 10.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s or faster

Every name-brand SD card that you can find for sale online will be rated Class 10. You can discover the class rating of an SD card by searching for a number inside of the C on the label.

Ultra High Speed (UHS)

Example of an SD memory card with a UHS-I rating.
The UHS rating of a card can be determined by a Roman numeral I, II, or III on the label of the card.

The Ultra High Speed bus (UHS) is built into SDHC, SDXC, and SDUC cards. The UHS bus makes it possible for increased file transfer rates.

There are three separate specs. They are called UHS-I, UHS-II, and UHS-III.

You can find the UHS rating of an SD card by examining the label. If the memory card has UHS, a Roman numeral I, II, or III can be found on the front of the memory card.

  • UHS-I - Maximum transfer rate of 104 MB/s
  • UHS-II - Maximum transfer rate of 312 MB/s
  • UHS-III - Maximum transfer rate of 624 MB/s
