Best Sony SLT-A33 Memory Card

Two types of memory cards will work with the Sony A33. Sony PRO-HG Duo and PRO Duo will work with in addition to SDXC, SDHC, and SD memory cards.

Only just one memory card can be in the camera at the same time. You will need to choose between a PRO Duo or SD memory card.

Sony is the sole owner of the PRO Duo format. SD cards have had a wider adoption that PRO Duo cards because SD memory cards are quite a bit faster plus cheaper.

Pressed for time? My advice is this SD memory card combined with the A33:

SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I SDHC Memory Card

SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SDHC Memory Card

Performance to price ratio is exceptional. Read and write speeds are more than fast enough to use in a camera upgrade.

Best SD Cards

SanDisk, Lexar, and PNY are manufacturers that make high-quality Memory cards. The best SD cards I have owned have been SanDisk Extreme Pro SD cards.

You do not need to purchase a card made by SanDisk for your Sony SLT-A33. Look for memory cards with cool names. That will mean you get fast read/write rates, water resistance, and other professional features.

I have not run into issues with PNY Elite Performance or Lexar Professional SD cards.

The issues I have had with memory cards has been when I have used inexpensive brands. Not having a brand name increases the chance of data corruption or card errors.

If you are looking to spend less, don't buy a generic card. You will avoid problems by purchasing a name brand SD card with a reduced storage capacity.

Sony A33 SD Card Compatibility

SDXC, SDHC, and SD cards are usable with the Sony A33. In order to get the most overall performance from the A33, use an SD card.

The latest SDUC memory cards are not supported by the A33.

Currently, there are four specs of SD (Secure Digital) memory cards. Newer memory specifications add more tech that allows for greater storage space as well as greatly improve read/write speeds.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - 128MB to 2GB.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - 4GB to 32GB.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - 64GB to 2TB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - 4TB to 128TB.

SD Card Speed

Speed ratings of an SD memory card is based on the sequential write and read speeds. SD card file write speed is essential for video as well as continuous shooting.

A slow SD card can cause a drop in the number of continuous images the Sony A33 can take. This is because the camera's buffer is not able to write data to the SD card quickly enough.

When shooting video, a slow SD card can cause recording to end. The video file might also end up being corrupted. If you are going to record video, it is critical the SD card you use meets the required minimum continuous write speed for video.

Card read speed is nice to have for transferring files to a computer or laptop. If you have cards that are full, an SD card with a fast read speed will decrease the transfer time.

Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
10 inside of a C showing that the SD card is Class 10.

The Sony A33 requires no less than a Class 4 SD card.

An SD memory card is labeled with a Class rating based on the sustained continuous data write speed of the memory card. Class 10 is the maximum rating, even though SD cards are for sale that are considerably faster.

Here you can see all of the Classes and associated lowest read/write speeds:

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s or faster

Virtually any memory card worth owning for the Sony A33 will be a Class 10 memory card. In the short time since the announcement of the camera, Cards have gotten so much faster.

Ultra High Speed (UHS)

Example of an SD memory card with a UHS-I rating.
This card has a UHS-I rating. UHS-II and UHS-III cards will have II or III, respectively.

The Ultra High Speed (UHS) bus is available in SDUC, SDXC, and SDHC cards. The UHS bus makes it possible for increased file transfer rates.

There are three separate specs. They are UHS-I, UHS-II, and UHS-III.

Look at the front of the SD card to find out the UHS rating of a SD card. A Roman numeral I, II, or III on the front of the memory card, that will be the rating of the SD card.

  • UHS-I - Maximum transfer rate of 104 MB/s
  • UHS-II - Maximum transfer rate of 312 MB/s
  • UHS-III - Maximum transfer rate of 624 MB/s

Sony A33 PRO Duo Card Compatibility

One PRO-HG Duo or PRO Duo cards can be used in the Sony A33. What PRO-HG signifies is that the memory card has a minimum read speed of 50mb/s and a 15mb/s minimum write speed.

Sony Pro Duo memory cards are generally double the price of an SD memory card. I would not recommend purchasing a PRO Duo memory card to use in an A33 because of the increase in expense.

Image Capacity

Below is an approximate estimation of how many large JPEG images you can expect to store on each size of SD card.

  • 4GB - 1,160 images
  • 8GB - 2,320 images
  • 16GB - 4,640 images
  • 32GB - 9,280 images
