Best SD Cards

SD cards are now significantly more affordable than at the time the camera was originally revealed.

With the price range being so affordable, it will not be cost-effective to buy anything other than a professional-quality SD memory card.

The best SD cards I have used have been the SanDisk Extreme Pro, Lexar Professional, and PNY Elite Performance models. I have under no circumstances experienced data errors or a card physically fail with any of those cards.

Every last complication I have experienced has been when using low-cost unbranded SD cards. Attempting to save a small amount of money isn't worth it if your Rebel T4i is going to have complications.

If you want to save some money, purchase a lower capacity SD card from a quality company. That way, you will not have to be worried about the photographs stored on the memory card.

Canon Rebel T4i SD Card Compatibility

You are limited to using SDXC, SDHC, and SD cards in the Canon Rebel T4i. Ensure that you have the most recently released firmware installed on your camera for the best results.

The newest cards, SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity), cannot be used in the Rebel T4i.

You need to be aware of the 4 kinds of Secure Digital (SD) cards that there are. They can be told apart from the storage size of the SD card.

  • SD (Secure Digital) - 128MB to 2GB.

  • SDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity) - 64GB to 2TB.

Below is an approximation of the number of high-quality JPEGs pictures you can expect to fit on a memory card:

  • 16GB - 4,640 images

Speed, Class, & UHS Ratings

Card Speed

The speed rating of an SD memory card is based on the sequential read and write transfer speeds of the card. The transfer speed of a memory card is critical for video in addition to continuous shooting.

Slows cards can reduce the number of continuous photos the Canon Rebel T4i can take. This is because the buffer in the camera is not able to write data to the SD card fast enough.

When recording video, a slow memory card can cause an abrupt end to a recording. The video file may also end up being corrupted. If you are going to record video, it is crucial the SD card you use meets the required write speed for video.

Read speed is nice to have for transferring files to a computer or laptop. If you have cards that are full, a memory card with a fast transfer speed will save you time.

Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
The 10 inside of the C means the card is Class 10.

An SD card receives a Class rating in line with its sustained write speed. Memory cards that have a minimum write speed of 10MB/s are labeled as Class 10.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s or faster

Every brand of card that you can find will be rated Class 10. To locate the class rating of an SD card, look for a number inside of the C on the front.

Ultra High Speed (UHS)

Example of an SD memory card with a UHS-I rating.
The UHS rating of a card can be determined by a Roman numeral I, II, or III on the label of the card.

The Ultra High Speed bus (UHS) comes in SDUC, SDXC, and SDHC cards. The UHS bus cards to achieve faster read and write speeds.

Three separate specs have been made. The versions are UHS-I, UHS-II, and UHS-III.

To find out the UHS rating of a SD memory card, look at the label. The presence of a Roman numeral I, II, or III on the front of the memory card, that is going to be the UHS rating of the card.

  • UHS-I - Maximum transfer rate of 104 MB/s
  • UHS-II - Maximum transfer rate of 312 MB/s
  • UHS-III - Maximum transfer rate of 624 MB/s

If you could only choose one, the 128GB SanDisk Extreme Pro is the best memory card for the Canon Rebel T4i. Any future camera you buy, you will know what memory card to buy.
