Best Canon PowerShot Digital Camera Memory Card

The Canon PowerShot SX510 HS can use SDXC, SDHC, and SD memory cards. A card with fast enough write speeds is critical for video and burst shooting.

You can greatly decrease the performance of your camera by using the wrong memory card.

Want to skip the tech specs? Listed below is my recommendation on the memory card to use in your Canon PowerShot SX510 HS:

SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB UHS-I SD Card

SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SD Card

  • Best value for the money.
  • Capacities from 32 GB to 2TB.
  • Transfer speeds up to 170 MB/s.
  • Class 10 & UHS-I
  • Temperature Proof, Water Proof, Shock Proof, and X-ray Proof.

Best SD Cards

SD memory cards are now drastically lower priced than at the time the camera was initially introduced to the market.

Seeing as how cheap the cost are, it will not make financial sense to buy anything besides a professional-quality SD memory card.

SanDisk Extreme Pro, Lexar Professional, and PNY Elite Performance cards are excellent. I have never experienced a card failure or data errors with any of those SD memory cards.

All of the issues I have had has been due to low-cost unbranded cards. Attempting to save around a dollar isn't worth it if your PowerShot SX510 HS does not function in the right way.

To cut costs, purchase a lower capacity memory card from a high-quality manufacturer. That way, you will know your images are secure on the memory card.

Canon PowerShot SX510 HS SD Card Compatibility

You can only use SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards with the Canon PowerShot SX510 HS. Be sure that you have the most up-to-date firmware installed on your camera for the best functionality.

The newest cards, SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity), are not able to be used with the PowerShot SX510 HS.

The Canon Rebel T5i can use the same capacity SD cards. There are also many great lenses for the Canon Rebel T5i for portrait photography and every day photography.

You need to know of the 4 different kinds of Secure Digital (SD) memory cards that can be bought. They are separated by capactiy.

  • SD (Secure Digital) - 128MB to 2GB.
  • SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) - 4GB to 32GB.
  • SDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity) - 64GB to 2TB.
  • SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity) - 4TB to 128TB.

  • 32GB - 9,280 images
  • 64GB - 18,560
  • 128GB - 37,120

Speed, Class, & UHS Ratings

Card Speed

The speed rating of an SD card is classified by the sequential write and read speeds of the card. Memory card file write speed is essential for video and continuous shooting.

Slows SD cards can cut down the number of continuous images the Canon PowerShot SX510 HS can capture. This is because the buffer in the camera is not able to write data to the memory card quickly enough.

With video, a slow SD card can cause recording to end. The video file may also be corrupted. If you intend to shoot video, it is essential the card you use meets the required continuous write speed for video.

Card read speed is important for file transfers to a computer. If you are filling up cards with images or video, a card with a fast read speed will save you time.

Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
The 10 inside of the C means the card is Class 10.

An SD card receives a Class rating determined by its continuous write speed. Memory cards that have a minimum write speed of at least 10MB/s are rated as Class 10.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s or faster

Every brand of SD memory card that you can get will receive a Class 10 rating. To determine the class rating of a memory card, look for a number inside of the C on the sticker.

Ultra High Speed (UHS)

Example of an SD memory card with a UHS-I rating.
The UHS rating of a card can be determined by a Roman numeral I, II, or III on the label of the card.

The Ultra High Speed (UHS) bus can be gotten with SDUC, SDXC, and SDHC memory cards. UHS makes it possible for increased file transfer rates.

There are 3 different specs. The three are UHS-I, UHS-II, and UHS-III.

Look at the front of the memory card to determine the rating of a SD memory card. The presence of a Roman numeral I, II, or III on the front of the SD memory card, that will be the UHS rating of your SD card.

  • UHS-I - Maximum transfer rate of 104 MB/s
  • UHS-II - Maximum transfer rate of 312 MB/s
  • UHS-III - Maximum transfer rate of 624 MB/s
