Best Canon PowerShot Digital Camera Memory Card

The Canon PowerShot SX200 IS can use SD memory cards. 32GB is the largest capacity SD card that will work in the PowerShot SX200 IS. MultiMediaCards (MMC) and MMCplus cards can also be used in the camera.

SD memory cards labeled as SDXC or SDUC won't function correctly in the PowerShot SX200 IS. These cards will be 64GB or bigger, so they can easily be avoided.

Want to skip the jargon? Listed below is my suggestion on the memory card for use with your Canon PowerShot SX200 IS:

64GB or larger cards are not compatible with the camera.

Best SD Cards

Make sure to get a card from a brand name with a great reputation, particularly Lexar or SanDisk. Avoid ordering cards from low-cost third party brand names.

Memory card failures, including a complete loss of all your shots resulting from file corruption, is more likely to occur with cut-rate cards. The decrease in build quality is not worth the negligible savings.

Buying a smaller sized capacity memory card is a shrewd way to reduce expenses. They may be slightly lower in cost and you won't have to be worried about the SD card failing.

Be aware that, SD card problems are rarely experienced. In my time, I have only suffered from a couple of cards fail. Age could have added to the failure, as the SD cards were included with used cameras.

Canon PowerShot SX200 IS SD Card Compatibility

The Canon PowerShot SX200 IS is only capable of using SD memory cards. There are 4 different technical specs of Secure Digital (SD) memory cards. The benefit is that there is an improvement in the max storage capacity and transfer speeds with the release of each new spec.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

Higher capacity memory cards can be used by the Canon Rebel T5i. In addition to that you can see the best Canon Rebel T5i lenses.

The card reader in the Canon PowerShot SX200 IS will only work with the original two SD card specs. SDUC or SDXC SD memory cards won't function correctly.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the PowerShot SX200 IS.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB and are also compatible with the PowerShot SX200 IS.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.

Canon PowerShot SX200 IS Memory Card Full Error

SD card contacts for Canon digital point and shoot camera

Attempting to use an SD memory card that has a storage capacity of 64GB or larger in the PowerShot SX200 IS results in the digital point and shoot camera to display an error message.

Get a card which has a capacity of 32GB or smaller to fix the error.

If you have a memory card that is 32GB or smaller, and it is not working correctly, format the card in the camera.

Speed, Class, & Capacity

SD Card Image Capacity

Here is a quick estimation of the total quantity of large JPEGs you could expect to keep on an SD card.

  • 4GB - 1920 images
  • 8GB - 3840 images
  • 16GB - 7680 images
  • 32GB - 15360 images

Memory Card Speed

The speed rating for SD cards is determined by the sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the card is important when many photos need to be written to the card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
This is a Class 10 SD memory card as shown by the '10' inside of the 'C'

The Class speed rating of an SD memory card is related to the sustained write speed of the card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the memory card can sustain a write speed of more than 2MB per second.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s

The top rating a memory card can obtain is Class 10. There are memory cards that are a lot faster than 10MB/s. Those cards use other technology, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), which uses a separate rating criteria.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.

MultiMediaCard Compatibility

In 1997, the MultiMediaCard specification was introduced to the market by Siemens AG and SanDisk. MMC cards appear to be a thinner SD card.

The first two generations of MMC cards will function correctly in the Canon PowerShot SX200 IS. Compatible cards will be branded as MMCplus or MMC. Later versions won't work correctly with the Canon PowerShot SX200 IS

I would not recommend buying any MMC cards. Compatible MMC cards for the PowerShot SX200 IS are not at present being produced. For that reason, they are troublesome to obtain pre-owned and expensive.

Conclusion

The best SD memory card for the Canon PowerShot SX200 IS is the SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SD Memory Card. However, the Lexar Professional 32GB SD Memory Card offers the best value.
