Best Canon PowerShot Digital Camera Memory Card

The Canon PowerShot SX170 IS can use SDXC, SDHC, and SD memory cards. Fast write speeds are an essential aspect for video and continuous shooting.

The SD card you choose has a large effect on the overall performance of your camera.

If you are in a hurry, here's the best memory card you can buy for the Canon PowerShot SX170 IS:

Best SD Cards

SD cards are now drastically more affordable than when the camera was first released.

With costs becoming low, it doesn't make sense to spend money on anything other than a pro-level card.

The best cards I own have been the SanDisk Extreme Pro, Lexar Professional, and PNY Elite Performance models. I have under no circumstances encountered a card become inoperable or corrupted data with any of those SD cards.

All the hassles I have had has been because of cheap unbranded cards. Seeking to save around a dollar is not worth it if your PowerShot SX170 IS will not function properly.

A smart way to spend less money is to find a lower storage capacity memory card from a high-quality company. By making that choice, you'll know your shots are safe and sound on the SD card.

Speed, Class, & UHS Ratings

Card Speed

The speed rating of an SD card is determined by the continuous write and read transfer speeds of the card. The transfer speed of a SD memory card is critical for clearing the camera buffer for continuous shooting as well as recording video.

Slows SD cards can decrease the number of continuous images the Canon PowerShot SX170 IS can capture. This is because the camera's buffer is not able to write data to the SD card fast enough.

With video, a slow memory card can cause an abrupt end to shooting. The video file may also be corrupted. If you intend to capture video, it is critical the memory card you use meets the required minimum continuous write speed for video.

Card read speed is nice to have for transferring files to a computer or laptop. If you have cards that are full, a SD card with a fast transfer speed will save you time.

Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
The 10 inside of the C means the card is Class 10.

The continuous write speed of a card is represented by the Class rating. Memory cards that have a write speed of 10MB/s are labeled as Class 10.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s or faster

Every brand-name SD memory card that you can find for sale today will receive a Class 10 rating. To determine the class rating of a card, search for a number inside of a C on the front.

Ultra High Speed (UHS)

Example of an SD memory card with a UHS-I rating.
The UHS rating of a card can be determined by a Roman numeral I, II, or III on the label of the card.

The Ultra High Speed bus (UHS) is often found in SDHC, SDXC, and SDUC cards. The UHS bus memory cards to achieve faster write speeds.

Three separate specifications exist. They are called UHS-I, UHS-II, and UHS-III.

Look at the front of the SD card to find the rating of a card. A Roman numeral I, II, or III on the label, that will be the UHS rating of the SD memory card.

  • UHS-I - Maximum transfer rate of 104 MB/s
  • UHS-II - Maximum transfer rate of 312 MB/s
  • UHS-III - Maximum transfer rate of 624 MB/s
