Best Canon PowerShot Digital Camera Memory Card

The Canon PowerShot SX120 IS uses SD memory cards. The biggest capacity SD card that can be used in the PowerShot SX120 IS is 32GB. MMCplus and MultiMediaCard (MMC) can also be used.

SD memory cards that meet the SDXC or SDUC requirements will not function in the PowerShot SX120 IS. These cards will be At least 64GB or bigger, so they are easy to avoid.

Don't care about the technical details? Below is my recommendation on the card for use with the Canon PowerShot SX120 IS:

SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I SDHC Memory Card

SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SDHC

  • Best value for the money.
  • Read speeds of up to 95MB/s; write speeds of up to 90MB/s.
  • Shock-proof, temperature-proof, waterproof, and x-ray proof.
  • UHS speed Class 3 (U3) and UHS video speed Class 30 (V30).

64GB or larger cards are not compatible with the camera.

Best SD Cards

Be sure to buy a card from a company with a good reputation, particularly Lexar or SanDisk. Avoid buying cards from bargain-priced third party brands.

Memory card problems, such as a loss of all of your photos as a consequence of data corruption, is more inclined to occur with inexpensive cards. A minimal amount of cost savings is not worth the reduction of construction quality.

The smart way to save a bit of money is to just buy a card with a smaller capacity. They tend to be a little more affordable and you won't need to fret about the SD card becoming corrupted.

Do not forget, SD card problems are not common. In my time, I have only suffered from a couple of cards fail. Age could have added to the failure, as the SD cards were included with previously owned digital cameras.

Canon PowerShot SX120 IS SD Card Compatibility

The Canon PowerShot SX120 IS is limited to only using SD memory cards. There are currently four separate specs of Secure Digital (SD) cards. The benefit is that there is an improvement in the max capacity and transfer rates with the introduction of each new standard.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

For more storage, cameras like the Canon Rebel T6i can use larger capacity cards. There are also many top lenses for the Canon Rebel T6i.

The card reader in the Canon PowerShot SX120 IS will only work with the initial two SD card specifications. SDUC or SDXC memory cards are not going to be compatible.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the PowerShot SX120 IS.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB and are also compatible with the PowerShot SX120 IS.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.

Canon PowerShot SX120 IS Memory Card Full Error

Attempting to use an SD memory card that has a storage capacity of 64GB or larger in the PowerShot SX120 IS will cause the digital point and shoot camera to show an error.

Use an SD memory card that has a storage capacity of 32GB or less to rectify the error.

If you have a memory card that has a storage capacity less than 32GB, and the card is not functioning correctly, try to format the memory card while it is in the camera.

Speed, Class, & Capacity

SD Card Image Capacity

This is a quick estimation of the number of large JPEGs you can expect to store on an SD card.

  • 4GB - 1920 images
  • 8GB - 3840 images
  • 16GB - 7680 images
  • 32GB - 15360 images

Memory Card Speed

The speed rating for SD cards is established by the sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the card is important in cases where many shots need to be written or read from the SD card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
This is a Class 10 SD memory card as shown by the '10' inside of the 'C'

The Class speed rating of an SD card is determined by the sustained write speed of the memory card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the SD card can sustain a write speed of at minimum 2MB per second.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s

The highest rating an SD memory card can be given is Class 10. There are memory cards that are substantially faster than 10MB/s. Those SD memory cards use other solutions, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), which uses a different rating criteria.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.

MultiMediaCard Compatibility

Siemens AG and SanDisk unveiled the MultiMediaCard specification in 1997. MMC cards are close in size to an SD memory card, but they are slightly thinner.

The first two generations of MMC cards are going to work correctly in the Canon PowerShot SX120 IS. That comprises of the 1st memory cards labeled as MMC and the 2nd gen MMCplus cards. Later generations will not work correctly in the Canon PowerShot SX120 IS

It is not a smart choice to buy any MMC cards. There is no one that is presently producing MMC cards compatible in the PowerShot SX120 IS. Hence, they are quite challenging to come across pre-owned as well as being high-priced.

Conclusion

The best SD memory card for the Canon PowerShot SX120 IS is the SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SD Memory Card. However, the Lexar Professional 32GB SD Memory Card offers the best value.
