Best Canon PowerShot Digital Camera Memory Card

The Canon PowerShot SX110 IS requires SD memory cards. 32GB is the maximum capacity SD card that can be used in the PowerShot SX110 IS. MultiMediaCards (MMC) and MMCplus cards can also be used in the camera.

SD memory cards that meet the SDUC or SDXC requirements are not going to function properly in the PowerShot SX110 IS. These cards are easy to avoid as they are 64GB or larger in capacity.

Don't want to read the technical specs? Below is my suggestion on the memory card for use in your Canon PowerShot SX110 IS:

SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I SDHC Memory Card

SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SDHC

  • Best value for the money.
  • Read speeds of up to 95MB/s; write speeds of up to 90MB/s.
  • Shock-proof, temperature-proof, waterproof, and x-ray proof.
  • UHS speed Class 3 (U3) and UHS video speed Class 30 (V30).

64GB or larger cards are not compatible with the camera.

Best SD Cards

Make sure to select a card from a brand name with a rock-solid reputation, particularly Lexar or SanDisk. Avoid ordering cards from bargain-priced generic brands.

Memory card troubles, like a loss of all your images resulting from file corruption, is much more likely to take place with inexpensive cards. The reduction in build quality is not worth the tiny cost savings.

Buying a reduced capacity memory card is a good way to save some money. They usually are a bit less expensive and you won't have to fret about the SD card losing your images.

Keep in mind, SD card failures are unlikely to occur. Just two cards have become corrupted out of the loads I have possessed over many years. The two memory cards were pre-owned house cards that were bundled along with the purchase of pre-owned DSLRs.

Canon PowerShot SX110 IS SD Card Compatibility

The Canon PowerShot SX110 IS can only use SD memory cards. There are four different specifications of Secure Digital (SD) memory cards. The benefit is that there is a boost in the transfer speeds and maximum storage capacity with the release of every updated spec.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

The Canon Rebel T6i can use larger capacity SD cards. There are also many great lenses for the Canon Rebel T6i for portrait photography and every day photography.

The card reader in the Canon PowerShot SX110 IS is only compatible with the initial two SD card specifications. SDXC or SDUC memory cards will not function correctly.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the PowerShot SX110 IS.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB and are also compatible with the PowerShot SX110 IS.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.

Canon PowerShot SX110 IS Memory Card Full Error

SD card contacts for Canon digital point and shoot camera

Trying to use an SD memory card that is 64GB or larger in the PowerShot SX110 IS will result in the digital point and shoot camera to show an error message.

Get a memory card which has a capacity of 32GB or smaller to rectify the problem.

If you are using a memory card that has a capacity less than 32GB, and the card is not working, try to format the SD memory card while it is in the camera.

Speed, Class, & Capacity

SD Card Image Capacity

This is an estimate of how many large JPEGs you will be able to fit on an SD card.

  • 4GB - 1920 images
  • 8GB - 3840 images
  • 16GB - 7680 images
  • 32GB - 15360 images

Memory Card Speed

The speed rating for SD memory cards is established by sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the card is important in the event that many photographs need to be written to the card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
This is a Class 10 SD memory card as shown by the '10' inside of the 'C'

The Class speed rating of an SD memory card is based on the sustained write speed of the memory card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the memory card can maintain a write speed of at minimum 2MB per second.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s

The top rating a memory card can get is Class 10. There are cards that are significantly faster than 10MB/s. Those SD memory cards use other technologies, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), that have a separate rating standard.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.

MultiMediaCard Compatibility

Siemens AG and SanDisk introduced the MultiMediaCard specification in 1997. MMC cards look like a slimmer SD memory card.

MMC memory cards that will be able to function correctly in the Canon PowerShot SX110 IS include the first two generations. That consists of the 1st memory cards branded as MMC and the second generation MMCplus memory cards. Later generations won't work with the Canon PowerShot SX110 IS

Steer clear of buying an MMC memory card. No one is actively producing MMC cards that will work in the PowerShot SX110 IS. For that reason, they are challenging to come across pre-owned as well as being not cheap.

Conclusion

The best SD memory card for the Canon PowerShot SX110 IS is the SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SD Memory Card. However, the Lexar Professional 32GB SD Memory Card offers the best value.
