Best Canon PowerShot Digital Camera Memory Card

The Canon PowerShot SX1 IS requires SD memory cards. 32GB is the biggest capacity SD card that can be used in the PowerShot SX1 IS. MMCplus and MultiMediaCard (MMC) can also be used.

SD memory cards described as SDXC or SDUC will not function properly in the PowerShot SX1 IS. These cards are easy to avoid as they are 64GB or larger in size.

Just want to have the best? This is my suggestion on the SD memory card for use in your Canon PowerShot SX1 IS:

SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I SDHC Memory Card

SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SDHC

  • Best value for the money.
  • Read speeds of up to 95MB/s; write speeds of up to 90MB/s.
  • Shock-proof, temperature-proof, waterproof, and x-ray proof.
  • UHS speed Class 3 (U3) and UHS video speed Class 30 (V30).

64GB or larger cards are not compatible with the camera.

Recommended PowerShot SX1 IS SD Cards

The examples below are SD memory cards that can be used in the PowerShot SX1 IS. With any of the cards below, you will not have to worry about card glitches or reduced performance.

Best SD Cards

Lexar and SanDisk both make first-class memory cards. Low-cost no-name brand names need to be avoided.

Low-priced cards are more inclined to experience data corruption, meaning you can lose all of your photos saved on the card. The decrease in quality is not worth the minor cost savings.

The smart way to save money is to get hold of a card with a smaller capacity. They probably will be a little lower in cost and you won't have to be concerned about the SD card becoming corrupted.

Keep in mind, SD card issues are very uncommon. Over the years, I have only experienced two cards fail. Age could have contributed to the failure, as the SD cards were bundled with previously owned digital cameras.

Canon PowerShot SX1 IS SD Card Compatibility

4 different specs of Secure Digital (SD) cards exist. The Canon PowerShot SX1 IS is limited to using SD memory cards. Every updated memory card technical spec advances the max capacity and transfer rates when compared with the former specification.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

Higher capacity memory cards are able to be used by the Canon Rebel T6i. In addition to that you can see the best Canon Rebel T6i lenses.

The Canon PowerShot SX1 IS's card reader is only compatible with the initial two SD card technical specs. SDXC or SDUC SD cards won't operate correctly.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the PowerShot SX1 IS.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB and are also compatible with the PowerShot SX1 IS.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.

Canon PowerShot SX1 IS Memory Card Full Error

SD card contacts for Canon digital point and shoot camera

Attempting to use a card that has a storage capacity of 64GB or larger in size in the PowerShot SX1 IS will cause the camera to display an error.

Get an SD card that has a storage capacity of 32GB or smaller to prevent the error.

If you have an SD memory card that is 32GB or smaller capacity, and the card is not working correctly, format the card in the camera.

Speed, Class, & Capacity

SD Card Image Capacity

Here is a quick estimate of the number of large JPEGs you could expect to save on an SD memory card.

  • 4GB - 1920 images
  • 8GB - 3840 images
  • 16GB - 7680 images
  • 32GB - 15360 images

Memory Card Speed

The speed rating for SD memory cards is determined by the sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the card is important when many photos need to be written or read from the memory card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
This is a Class 10 SD memory card as shown by the '10' inside of the 'C'

The Class speed rating of an SD card is dependant on the sustained write speed of the card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the memory card can maintain a write speed of more than 2MB per second.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s

The best rating an SD card can have is Class 10. There are cards that are a good deal faster than 10MB/s. Those memory cards use other solutions, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), which have a different rating specification.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.

MultiMediaCard Compatibility

SanDisk and Siemens AG revealed the MultiMediaCard technical standard in 1997. MMC cards appear as if they are a slimmer SD memory card.

MMC cards that will be able to function in the Canon PowerShot SX1 IS consist of the 1st 2 generations. Suitable cards will be branded as MMCplus or MMC. Later versions are not going to function with the Canon PowerShot SX1 IS

Steer clear of purchasing an MMC memory card. Suitable MMC cards for the PowerShot SX1 IS are not currently being built. Consequently, they are costly as well as being difficult to buy used.

Conclusion

The best SD memory card for the Canon PowerShot SX1 IS is the SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SD Memory Card. However, the Lexar Professional 32GB SD Memory Card offers the best value.
