Best Canon PowerShot Digital Camera Memory Card

The Canon SD900 can use SD memory cards. The maximum capacity SD card that can be used in the SD900 is 32GB. MultiMediaCards (MMC) can also be used in the camera.

The camera was called the Canon DIGITAL IXUS 900 Ti throughout Europe.

SD memory cards that meet the SDUC or SDXC specifications will not work in the SD900. These cards will be At least 64GB or bigger, so they are easy to avoid.

Just want to have a memory card that is compatible? Here's my recommendation on the memory card for use with the Canon SD900:

SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I SDHC Memory Card

SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SDHC

  • Best value for the money.
  • Read speeds of up to 95MB/s; write speeds of up to 90MB/s.
  • Shock-proof, temperature-proof, waterproof, and x-ray proof.
  • UHS speed Class 3 (U3) and UHS video speed Class 30 (V30).

64GB or larger cards are not compatible with the camera.

Recommended SD900 SD Cards

Down below are SD memory cards that will work correctly with the SD900. With any of the cards below you will not have to be worried about poor performance or SD memory card errors.

SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I SDHC Memory Card

Best SD Cards

SanDisk and Lexar both produce good quality memory cards. Avoid picking cards from cheap third-party brands.

Low-priced cards are much more likely to experience data corruption, meaning you can lose all of your shots saved on the card. The reduction in build quality is not worth the minor savings.

The smart way to reduce costs is to purchase a card with a smaller sized capacity. They generally are a little bit cheaper and you will not have to be worried about the SD card having data failure.

Even then, SD card issues are infrequent. In my time, I have only experienced only two cards fail on me. The two memory cards were used third party cards that were bundled with the purchase of previously owned DSLRs.

Canon SD900 SD Card Compatibility

Currently, four separate specifications of Secure Digital (SD) memory cards are currently being made. The Canon SD900 uses SD memory cards. Every new memory card spec boosts the maximum capacity and read/write speeds when compared with the prior spec.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

The Canon SD900's card reader will only work with the first and second SD card standards. SDXC or SDUC SD memory cards will not function correctly.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the SD900.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB and are also compatible with the SD900.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.

Memory Card Full Error

Trying to use a memory card that is 64GB or larger in size in the SD900 will result in the camera to display an error.

Get an SD card which has a storage capacity of 32GB or smaller to rectify the error.

If you have a memory card that has a capacity less than 32GB, and it is not working correctly, try to format the memory card in the camera.

Speed, Class, & Capacity

SD Card Image Capacity

Here is a quick estimate of the number of large JPEGs you could expect to fit on an SD card.

  • 4GB - 1920 images
  • 8GB - 3840 images
  • 16GB - 7680 images
  • 32GB - 15360 images

Memory Card Speed

The speed rating for SD cards is determined by sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the SD memory card is important for when many shots need to be written to the SD memory card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
This is a Class 10 SD memory card as shown by the '10' inside of the 'C'

The Class speed rating of an SD memory card is related to the sustained write speed of the SD memory card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the memory card can maintain a write speed of at least 2MB per second.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s

The top rating a memory card can have is Class 10. There are memory cards that are significantly faster than 10MB/s. Those cards use other solutions, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), that have a different rating specification.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.

MultiMediaCard Compatibility

The MultiMediaCard specification was released in 1997 by SanDisk and Siemens AG. MMC cards resemble a slimmer SD memory card.

Only the first MMC cards will work correctly in the Canon SD900. The later gen MMCplus cards are not going to function correctly.

It is not a smart choice to buy an MMC card. No companies are currently producing MMC cards compatible in the SD900. Because of this, they are troublesome to purchase used to get pre-owned and unaffordable.

Conclusion

The best SD memory card for the Canon SD900 is the SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SD Memory Card. However, the Lexar Professional 32GB SD Memory Card offers the best value.
