Best Canon PowerShot Digital Camera Memory Card

The Canon SD850 IS requires SD memory cards. The largest capacity SD card that can be used in the SD850 IS is 32GB. MultiMediaCards (MMC) can also be used in the camera.

The digital was named the Canon DIGITAL IXUS 950 IS throughout Europe.

SD memory cards described as SDUC or SDXC are not going to work properly in the SD850 IS. These cards are easy to avoid as they are 64GB or larger in storage capacity.

Best SD Cards

Lexar and SanDisk both make excellent memory cards. Avoid picking cards from low-priced third party brand names.

Memory card failures, for instance, a complete loss of all of your shots resulting from file corruption, is much more likely to happen with bargain-priced cards. The reduction in build quality is not worth the minor cost savings.

Buying a reduced capacity card is a savvy way to save a small amount of money. They generally are a little bit cheaper and you will not have to stress out about the SD card becoming corrupted.

Do not forget, SD card issues are very infrequent. Through the years, I have only experienced a couple of cards fail on me. The two memory cards were pre-owned house cards that were bundled along with the purchase of pre-owned cameras.

Canon SD850 IS SD Card Compatibility

4 separate specifications of Secure Digital (SD) memory cards are currently being made. The Canon SD850 IS uses SD memory cards. The benefit is that there is an improvement in the transfer rates and maximum storage capacity with the release of each updated spec.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

The card reader in the Canon SD850 IS is only compatible with the first two SD card technical specs. SDXC or SDUC memory cards will not function correctly.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the SD850 IS.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB and are also compatible with the SD850 IS.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.

Memory Card Full Error

Attempting to use a memory card that has a storage capacity of 64GB or larger in size in the SD850 IS will result in the point and shoot camera to display an error.

Use a card that has a storage capacity of 32GB or less to resolve the error.

If you have an SD memory card that is 32GB or smaller capacity, and it is not working, try to format the memory card while it is in the camera.

Speed, Class, & Capacity

SD Card Image Capacity

Here is an estimate of the total number of large JPEGs you could expect to keep on an SD memory card.

  • 4GB - 1920 images
  • 8GB - 3840 images
  • 16GB - 7680 images
  • 32GB - 15360 images

Memory Card Speed

The speed rating for SD cards is established by sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the SD card is important in cases where many photos need to be written to the SD card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
This is a Class 10 SD memory card as shown by the '10' inside of the 'C'

The Class speed rating of an SD memory card is related to the sustained write speed of the memory card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the SD memory card can sustain a write speed of a minimum of 2MB per second.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s

The maximum rating an SD memory card can obtain is Class 10. There are cards that are a good deal faster than 10MB/s. Those SD cards use other solutions, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), which use different rating criteria.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.

MultiMediaCard Compatibility

The MultiMediaCard standard was introduced in 1997 by SanDisk and Siemens AG. MMC cards are similar in size to an SD memory card, but they are just a bit slimmer.

Only the original MMC cards will work correctly in the Canon SD850 IS. The later generation MMCplus cards will not work.

Steer clear of ordering an MMC memory card. There is no one that is actively manufacturing MMC cards that will work in the SD850 IS. Due to this fact, they are very expensive and really difficult to obtain pre-owned.

Conclusion

The best SD memory card for the Canon SD850 IS is the SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SD Memory Card. However, the Lexar Professional 32GB SD Memory Card offers the best value.
