Canon PowerShot SD630 SD Memory Card Compatibility

The Canon SD630 uses SD memory cards. The largest capacity SD card that can be used in the SD630 is 2GB. MultiMediaCards (MMC) can also be used.

SD memory cards described as SDHC, SDXC, or SDUC won’t work correctly in the SD630. These cards will be 4GB or bigger, so they can easily be avoided.

Best SD Cards

Be sure to choose a card from a brand name with a great reputation, particularly Transcend or SanDisk. Avoid purchasing cards from inexpensive third-party brand names.

Memory card failures, like a complete loss of all your images as a consequence of data corruption, is more likely to take place with inexpensive cards. A minuscule amount of savings on cost is not worth the decrease in level of quality.

In a situation where you would like to save money, buy a memory card with a smaller sized capacity. They should be a bit lower in price and you won’t need to be concerned about the SD card losing your images.

Even then, SD card issues are rarely experienced. Only two cards have failed out of the many I have owned over many years. The two memory cards were pre-owned generic cards that were bundled with the purchase of used digital point & shoots.

Canon SD630 SD Card Compatibility

The Canon SD630 uses SD memory cards. There are currently four different specifications of Secure Digital (SD) memory cards. Every new memory card spec improves the maximum capacity and transfer speeds when compared to the earlier standard.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

The Canon SD630’s card reader is only compatible with the original SD card standard. SDUC, SDXC, or SDHC memory card cards will not function correctly.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the SD630.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.

Trying to use a SD memory card that is 4GB or larger in size in the SD630 will result in the digital camera to show an error.

Get a memory card with a capacity of 2GB or less to prevent the problem.

If you attempting to use a SD memory card that is 2GB or a smaller capacity, and the card is not functioning correctly, try to format the card in the camera.

Speed, Class, & Capacity

SD Card Image Capacity

Here is a quick estimate of how many large JPEGs you could expect to save on an SD memory card.

  • 512MB - 240 images
  • 1GB - 480 images
  • 2GB - 960 images

Memory Card Speed

Speed ratings for SD memory cards are determined by the sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the memory card is important when many shots need to be written or read from the memory card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

SD Card Speed Class

The Class speed rating of an SD card is determined by the sustained write speed of the card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the memory card can maintain a write speed of at minimum 2MB per second.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s

The highest rating a card can attain is Class 10. There are memory cards that are a good deal faster than 10MB/s. Those SD cards use other solutions, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), which use a separate rating standards.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.
