The Canon SD1200 IS uses SD memory cards. The maximum capacity SD card that is compatible with the SD1200 IS is 32GB.

MMCplus and MultiMediaCard (MMC) can also be used. However, they are no longer manufactured. If you have one, you can use it. If you do not have one, don’t buy one, they will be more expensive than an SD card.

SD memory cards that satisfy the SDXC or SDUC standards are not going to function correctly in the SD1200 IS. These cards will be 64GB or bigger, so they can easily be avoided.

The SDHC format was announced in 2006. All 32GB cards that are currently being produced will have almost identical performance. You cannot go wrong buying the cheapest class 10 name brand card. At the time of writing this, the PNY Elite 32GB SD memory card has the best price.

First-class memory cards are manufacture by both Lexar and SanDisk. Low-cost no-name brands need to be avoided.

Memory card troubles, including a complete loss of all of your shots caused by file corruption, is more probable to happen with bargain-priced cards. A minimal amount of cost savings is not worth the decline in construction quality.

The smart way to reduce costs is to buy a card with a reduced capacity. They may be slightly more affordable and you won’t need to be anxious about the SD card losing your photographs.

Even then, SD card problems are very rare. Only a couple of cards have become unusable out of the dozens I have acquired over the years. Both memory cards were pre-owned third-party cards that were included along with the purchase of used cameras.

Canon SD1200 IS SD Card Compatibility

Currently, 4 different specs of Secure Digital (SD) memory cards are currently available. The Canon SD1200 IS uses SD memory cards. Every updated memory card specification increases the max storage capacity and transfer speeds when compared with the prior standard.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

The card reader in the Canon SD1200 IS is only compatible with the first two SD card technical specs. SDXC or SDUC cards will not function correctly.

Attempting to use a memory card that is 64GB or larger in the SD1200 IS results in the digital camera to display an error message.

Use a memory card with a storage capacity of 32GB or less to fix the error.

If you attempting to use a memory card that is 32GB or a smaller capacity, and the card is not functioning correctly, format the SD memory card while it is in the camera.

Memory Card Speed

Speed ratings for SD memory cards are determined by sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the card is important when many photos need to be written or read from the card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

The Class speed rating of an SD memory card is determined by the sustained write speed of the memory card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the SD memory card can sustain a write speed of a minimum of 2MB per second.

The best rating a card can attain is Class 10. There are SD memory cards that are substantially faster than 10MB/s. Those memory cards use other technology, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), which have a different rating specifications.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.

MultiMediaCard Compatibility

In 1997, the MultiMediaCard standard was released by Siemens AG and SanDisk. MMC cards are similar in size to an SD card, but they are just a bit thinner.

MMC memory cards that will be able to work in the Canon SD1200 IS consist of the 1st two versions. That includes the first memory cards labled as MMC and the 2nd generation MMCplus cards. Later versions will not work in the Canon SD1200 IS

I would never recommend ordering any MMC cards. Suitable MMC cards for the SD1200 IS are not at present being manufactured. Consequently, they are hard to get pre-owned and not cheap.

Conclusion

Buy an SD memory card for the Canon SD1200 IS based on price. An expensive card isn’t going to improve performance. As long as it is a speed class 10 card, you will be fine. My recommendation is the PNY Elite 32GB SD memory card.
