Canon PowerShot S5 IS SD Memory Card Compatibility

The Canon S5 IS uses SD memory cards. 32GB is the maximum capacity SD card that is compatible with the S5 IS.

MultiMediaCards (MMC) can also be used in the camera. However, they are not produced anymore. If you have one, you can use it. If you don’t have one, don’t buy one, they will be more expensive than an SD card.

SD memory cards labeled as SDXC or SDUC won’t work in the S5 IS. These cards can simply be avoided as they have a capacity of 64GB or more.

The SDHC format was announced in 2006. All 32GB cards that are currently being produced will have almost identical performance. You cannot go wrong buying the cheapest class 10 name brand card. At the time of writing this, the PNY Elite 32GB SD memory card has the best price.

Listed below are some options to choose from that are compatible in the S5 IS. With all of the cards below, you won’t have to worry about card glitches or slow functionality.

Best SD Cards

Lexar, PNY, Samsung, and SanDisk both produce excellent memory cards. Avoid getting cards from bargain-priced third-party brand names.

Memory card issues, like a complete loss of all of your photographs because of data corruption, is more inclined to happen with low-priced cards. A small amount of decrease in price is not worth the decrease of build quality.

Buying a reduced capacity memory card is a smart way to save a small amount of money. They may be a little less expensive and you won’t need to stress out about the SD card losing your photos.

Always bear in mind, SD card problems are unlikely to occur. Just 2 cards have become unusable out of the dozens I have acquired over many years. The two memory cards were used no-name cards that were bundled along with the purchase of pre-owned DSLRs.

Canon S5 IS SD Card Compatibility

Currently, 4 different specs of Secure Digital (SD) cards are currently being manufactured. The Canon S5 IS uses SD memory cards. Each new memory card standard advances the max storage capacity and transfer speeds when compared to the prior specification.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

The card reader in the Canon S5 IS can only read the original two SD card technical specs. SDUC or SDXC SD memory cards won’t function correctly.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the S5 IS.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB and are also compatible with the S5 IS.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.

Attempting to use an SD memory card that has a capacity of 64GB or larger in the S5 IS will result in the point and shoot camera to display an error.

Get an SD memory card with a capacity of 32GB or smaller to avoid the problem.

If you have a memory card that has a storage capacity less than 32GB, and it is not working correctly, format the memory card in the camera.

Speed, Class, & Capacity

SD Card Image Capacity

The following is a quick estimation of the total number of large JPEGs you will be able to keep on an SD card.

  • 4GB - 1920 images
  • 8GB - 3840 images
  • 16GB - 7680 images
  • 32GB - 15360 images

Memory Card Speed

Speed ratings for SD cards are established by the sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the SD card is important in the event that many pictures need to be written to the card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

/memory-cards/sd-card-speed-class.jpg
SD Card Speed Class

The Class speed rating of an SD card is related to the sustained write speed of the SD card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the memory card can sustain a write speed of more than 2MB per second.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s

The top rating an SD memory card can attain is Class 10. There are cards that are substantially faster than 10MB/s. Those cards use other technology, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), which use a separate rating criteria.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.

MultiMediaCard Compatibility

In 1997, the MultiMediaCard specification was unveiled by SanDisk and Siemens AG. MMC cards resemble a slimmer SD card.

The first two versions of MMC memory cards are going to function in the Canon S5 IS. That consists of the first cards known as as MMC and the second generation MMCplus memory cards. Later generations will not work correctly with the Canon S5 IS

I would never recommend buying any MMC memory cards. No companies are at present making MMC cards that will function in the S5 IS. Thus, they are challenging to obtain pre-owned as well as being very expensive.
