Best PowerShot G9 SD Memory Card

The Canon G9 uses SD memory cards. 32GB is the maximum capacity SD card that can be used in the G9.

MultiMediaCards (MMC) and MMCplus cards can also be used in the camera. However, they are no longer manufactured. If you have one, you can use it. If you don’t have one, do not buy one, they will be more expensive than an SD card.

SD memory cards labeled as SDXC or SDUC are not going to function in the G9. These cards are easy to avoid as they have a capacity of 64GB or larger.

The SDHC format was announced in 2006. All 32GB cards that are currently being produced will have almost identical performance. You cannot go wrong buying the cheapest class 10 name brand card. At the time of writing this, the PNY Elite 32GB SD memory card has the best price.

Here are some options to choose between that will function correctly with the G9. With any of the cards below, you won’t have to be concerned about slow overall performance or SD memory card errors.

Best SD Cards

SanDisk, PNY, Samsung, and Lexar both make high-quality memory cards. Avoid getting cards from cut-rate third party brands.

Low-priced cards are much more likely to experience file corruption, meaning you’ll lose all of your photos contained on the card. The reduction in build quality is not worth the minimal savings.

The smart way to save a bit of money is to buy a memory card with a smaller sized capacity. They will be a little more affordable and you won’t need to worry about the SD card becoming corrupted.

Always bear in mind, SD card failures are infrequent. Just two cards have become unusable out of the loads I have possessed over time. Age could have contributed to the failure, as the SD cards were bundled with used digital cameras.

Canon G9 SD Card Compatibility

The Canon G9 uses SD memory cards. There are currently 4 different specifications of Secure Digital (SD) cards. Every new memory card spec raises the max storage capacity and read/write speeds when compared to the former specification.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

The card reader in the Canon G9 will only work with the initial two SD card standards. SDUC or SDXC memory cards are not going to function correctly.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the G9.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB and are also compatible with the G9.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.

Canon G9 Memory Card Full Error

SD Card Contacts

Attempting to use a memory card that has a capacity of 64GB or larger in size in the G9 will cause the camera to show an error.

Get a card with a storage capacity of 32GB or smaller to resolve the error.

If you have an SD memory card that is 32GB or a smaller capacity, and the card is not functioning correctly, try to format the card in the camera.

Speed, Class, & Capacity

SD Card Image Capacity

This is a quick estimation of how many large JPEGs you could expect to save on an SD card.

  • 4GB - 1920 images
  • 8GB - 3840 images
  • 16GB - 7680 images
  • 32GB - 15360 images

Memory Card Speed

Speed ratings for SD cards are determined by the sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the memory card is important in the event that many photographs need to be written to the SD card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

/best-canon-powershot-g9-sd-memory-card/sd-card-speed-class.jpg
SD Card Speed Class

The Class speed rating of an SD memory card is related to the sustained write speed of the memory card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the memory card can sustain a write speed of at minimum 2MB per second.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s

The top rating an SD memory card can get is Class 10. There are SD cards that are a good deal faster than 10MB/s. Those SD memory cards use other technology, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), which have a different rating specifications.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.

MultiMediaCard Compatibility

The MultiMediaCard standard was unveiled by Siemens AG and SanDisk in 1997. MMC cards appear to be a thinner SD card.

MMC cards that are going to work correctly in the Canon G9 consist of the first 2 generations. Compatible cards will be labeled as MMCplus or MMC. Later generations are not going to function with the Canon G9

Avoid ordering an MMC memory card. No one is at this time making MMC cards compatible in the G9. Because of that, they are costly as well as being really difficult to buy pre-owned.

Conclusion

Buy an SD memory card for the Canon G9 based on price. An expensive card isn’t going to improve performance. As long as it is a speed class 10 card, you will be fine. My recommendation is the PNY Elite 32GB SD memory card.
