The Canon G7 needs SD memory cards. The largest capacity SD card that will work in the G7 is 32GB. MultiMediaCards (MMC) can also be used in the camera.
SD memory cards described as SDXC or SDUC are not going to function in the G7. These cards are easy to avoid as they are 64GB or larger in capacity.
Want to skip the jargon? This is my recommendation on the SD card for use with your Canon G7:
- Best value for the money.
- Read speeds of up to 95MB/s; write speeds of up to 90MB/s.
- Shock-proof, temperature-proof, waterproof, and x-ray proof.
- UHS speed Class 3 (U3) and UHS video speed Class 30 (V30).
64GB or larger cards are not compatible with the camera.

Best SD Cards
Premium quality memory cards are manufacture by both SanDisk and Lexar. Bargain-priced third party brands need to be avoided.
Low-cost cards are more liable to experience data corruption, meaning you'll lose all of your shots contained on the card. A minuscule amount of savings on cost is not worth the decrease in quality.
Buying a smaller sized capacity memory card is a shrewd way to save some money. They usually are a tiny bit lower in price and you will not have to be worried about the SD card losing your photographs.
Be aware that, SD card issues are very infrequent. Just two cards have become corrupted out of the multitude I have owned over many years. Age may have played a role, as the SD cards were included with previously owned digital cameras.
Canon G7 SD Card Compatibility
The Canon G7 is limited to using SD memory cards. There are currently 4 different specs of Secure Digital (SD) memory cards. Every new memory card specification increases the transfer rates and max storage capacity when compared with the former standard.
Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.
The Canon G7's card reader is only compatible with the first and second SD card specs. SDUC or SDXC cards are not going to operate correctly.
- Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the G7.
- Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB and are also compatible with the G7.
- Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
- Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.
Memory Card Full Error

Trying to use a memory card that has a capacity of 64GB or larger in the G7 results in the point and shoot camera to show an error message.
Use a card that has a capacity of 32GB or less to avoid the problem.
If you are using a memory card that is 32GB or smaller, and the card is not working, format the card while it is in the camera.
Speed, Class, & Capacity
SD Card Image Capacity
The following is a quick estimation of the total quantity of large JPEGs you will be able to store on an SD memory card.
- 4GB - 1920 images
- 8GB - 3840 images
- 16GB - 7680 images
- 32GB - 15360 images
Memory Card Speed
Speed ratings for SD memory cards are established by sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the memory card is important in the event that many photographs need to be written or read from the SD memory card.
SD Card Speed Class Rating

The Class speed rating of an SD memory card is related to the sustained write speed of the memory card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the SD card can maintain a write speed of at least 2MB per second.
- Class 2 - 2MB/s
- Class 4 - 4MB/s
- Class 6 - 6MB/s
- Class 8 - 8MB/s
- Class 10 - 10MB/s
The top rating a card can attain is Class 10. There are memory cards that are significantly faster than 10MB/s. Those memory cards use other technologies, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), which have a different rating standard.
Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.
MultiMediaCard Compatibility
The MultiMediaCard standard was introduced in 1997 by SanDisk and Siemens AG. MMC cards are close in size to an SD memory card, but they are a bit slimmer.
Only the earliest MMC cards will work in the Canon G7. Second generation cards, such as MMCplus, are not going to work correctly in the Canon G7.
Avoid ordering an MMC memory card. Suitable MMC cards for the G7 are not at this time being produced. Hence, they are very expensive as well as being challenging to buy pre-owned.
Conclusion
The best SD memory card for the Canon G7 is the SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SD Memory Card. However, the Lexar Professional 32GB SD Memory Card offers the best value.
