Best Canon PowerShot Digital Camera Memory Card

SDXC, SDHC, and SD memory cards are manufactured to work in the Canon PowerShot G12. A memory card with fast enough write speeds is crucial for continuous shooting and video.

The memory card you buy is a large effect on the overall performance of your camera.

Don't want to read the tech specs? Here's my recommendation on the SD card to use with your Canon PowerShot G12:

SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB UHS-I SD Card

SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SD Card

  • Best value for the money.
  • Capacities from 32 GB to 2TB.
  • Transfer speeds up to 170 MB/s.
  • Class 10 & UHS-I
  • Temperature Proof, Water Proof, Shock Proof, and X-ray Proof.

Best SD Cards

Like all things tech, the cost of memory cards has greatly fallen since the release of the Canon PowerShot G12.

Due to the cost being quite cheap, it would not be advisable to choose anything besides a pro-level card.

SanDisk Extreme Pro, Lexar Professional, and PNY Elite Performance cards have superb overall performance and build quality. I have never experienced a card break or data errors with those SD memory cards.

Each and every issue I have experienced has been due to generic unbranded SD memory cards. Hoping to save around a dollar isn't worthwhile if your PowerShot G12 will not function as expected.

If you want to save some money, select a lower storage capacity SD card from a high-quality supplier. By making that choice, you will not have to be concerned about the photos stored on the memory card.

Canon PowerShot G12 SD Card Compatibility

The memory cards that will work in the Canon PowerShot G12 are SDXC, SDHC, and SD. For best performance, ensure your camera is using the most recent firmware.

The newest memory cards, SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity), can not be used with the PowerShot G12.

There are four different types of Secure Digital (SD) cards that you need to be aware of. They are divided by their size.

  • SD (Secure Digital) - 128MB to 2GB.
  • SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) - 4GB to 32GB.
  • SDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity) - 64GB to 2TB.
  • SDUC (Secure Digital Ultra Capacity) - 4TB to 128TB.

The following is an approximation of the number of high-quality JPEGs photos you should be expecting to be saved on a SD card:

  • 16GB - 4,640 images
  • 32GB - 9,280 images
  • 64GB - 18,560
  • 128GB - 37,120

Speed, Class, & UHS Ratings

Card Speed

Speed ratings of an SD memory card is dependant on the continuous read and write speeds of the card. The continuous write speed of a memory card is very important for continuous shooting and video.

Slows cards can cause a drop in the number of continuous photos the Canon PowerShot G12 can capture. This is because the camera's buffer is not able to write to the SD card quickly enough.

When recording video, a slow card can cause an abrupt end to shooting. The video file might also be corrupted. If you are going to capture video, it is critical the memory card you use meets the minimum requirements of the PowerShot G12.

Read speed is nice to have for transferring files to a computer or laptop. If you are filling up cards with images or video, a SD card with a fast transfer speed will cut down on the amount of time it takes the transfer to complete.

Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
The 10 inside of the C means the card is Class 10.

The Class rating of a card is determined by the sustained write speed. SD cards that have a write speed of at least 10MB/s are labeled as Class 10.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s or faster

Every name-brand SD memory card that you can buy today will be Class 10. You can locate the class rating of a SD card by searching for a number inside of a C on the front label.

Ultra High Speed (UHS)

Example of an SD memory card with a UHS-I rating.
The UHS rating of a card can be determined by a Roman numeral I, II, or III on the label of the card.

The Ultra High Speed (UHS) bus is built into SDUC, SDXC, and SDHC cards. The UHS bus allows provides a way to improve data transfer rates.

Three different specifications exist. They are called UHS-I, UHS-II, and UHS-III.

You can find the rating of a SD card by looking at the front of the SD card. If there is a Roman numeral I, II, or III on the front of the memory card, that is going to be the Rating of your SD memory card.

  • UHS-I - Maximum transfer rate of 104 MB/s
  • UHS-II - Maximum transfer rate of 312 MB/s
  • UHS-III - Maximum transfer rate of 624 MB/s
