Best Canon PowerShot Digital Camera Memory Card

The Canon PowerShot G11 needs SD memory cards. 32GB is the largest capacity SD card that can be used in the PowerShot G11. MMCplus and MultiMediaCard (MMC) can also be used in the camera.

SD memory cards labeled as SDUC or SDXC are not going to work in the PowerShot G11. These cards will be 64GB or larger, so they are easy to avoid.

Best SD Cards

Lexar and SanDisk both manufacture high-quality memory cards. Bargain-priced generic brand names ought to be avoided.

Cheap cards are more probable to encounter file corruption, meaning that you can lose all of your shots contained on the card. A small amount of cost savings is not worth the decrease in construction quality.

Buying a smaller sized capacity memory card is a clever way to save a bit of money. They will be slightly lower in price and you will not have to stress out about the SD card failing.

Be aware that, SD card problems are uncommon. Only only two cards have become unusable out of the considerable number I have possessed over many years. Age could have added to the failure, as the SD cards were included with pre-owned digital cameras.

Canon PowerShot G11 SD Card Compatibility

Currently, four different specifications of Secure Digital (SD) memory cards exist. The Canon PowerShot G11 can only use SD memory cards. The benefit is that there is an improvement in the transfer speeds and maximum capacity with the introduction of each updated standard.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

Cards with more storage can be used by cameras like the Canon Rebel T3i. Not only are there great telephoto lenses for the Canon Rebel T3i, there are also excellent low light lenses.

The Canon PowerShot G11's card reader can only read the first and second SD card specifications. SDXC or SDUC SD memory cards are not going to be compatible.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the PowerShot G11.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB and are also compatible with the PowerShot G11.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.

Canon PowerShot G11 Memory Card Full Error

Trying to use an SD card that is 64GB or larger in size in the PowerShot G11 results in the digital camera to show an error message.

Get an SD memory card that has a storage capacity of 32GB or less to prevent the error.

If you attempting to use an SD memory card that is 32GB or smaller capacity, and it is not functioning correctly, try to format the card while it is in the camera.

Speed, Class, & Capacity

SD Card Image Capacity

The following is a quick estimation of the quantity of large JPEGs you could expect to save on an SD card.

  • 4GB - 1920 images
  • 8GB - 3840 images
  • 16GB - 7680 images
  • 32GB - 15360 images

Memory Card Speed

Speed ratings for SD cards are determined by sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the card is important when many pictures need to be written or read from the SD memory card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
This is a Class 10 SD memory card as shown by the '10' inside of the 'C'

The Class speed rating of an SD memory card is based on the sustained write speed of the card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the card can sustain a write speed of at least 2MB per second.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s

The highest rating a card can be given is Class 10. There are SD cards that are a lot faster than 10MB/s. Those SD memory cards use other technology, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), which have separate rating criteria.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.

MultiMediaCard Compatibility

The MultiMediaCard standard was unveiled by Siemens AG and SanDisk in 1997. MMC cards appear as if they are a slimmer SD memory card.

Only the 1st two versions of MMC memory cards will work correctly in the Canon PowerShot G11. That includes the 1st cards branded as MMC and the 2nd generation MMCplus cards. Later versions will not function with the Canon PowerShot G11

I would not advise purchasing any MMC cards. Compatible MMC cards for the PowerShot G11 are not presently being built. Because of this, they are very expensive as well as being difficult to buy pre-owned.

The best SD memory card for the Canon PowerShot G11 is the SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SD Memory Card. However, the Lexar Professional 32GB SD Memory Card offers the best value.
