Best Canon PowerShot G10 SD Memory Card

The Canon G10 uses SD memory cards. The maximum capacity SD card that can be used in the G10 is 32GB.

MMCplus and MultiMediaCard (MMC) can also be used in the camera. However, they are not produced anymore. If you have one, you can use it. If you do not have one, don’t buy one, they will be more expensive than an SD card.

SD memory cards that meets the SDUC or SDXC standards won’t function properly in the G10. These cards are easy to avoid as they have a capacity of 64GB or more.

The SDHC format was announced in 2006. All 32GB cards that are currently being produced will have almost identical performance. You cannot go wrong buying the cheapest class 10 name brand card. At the time of writing this, the PNY Elite 32GB SD memory card has the best price.

Best SD Cards

Make sure to purchase a card from a brand name with a good reputation, such as SanDisk or Lexar. Low-cost generic brand names should be avoided.

Memory card issues, such as a loss of all your photographs as a consequence of file corruption, is more inclined to occur with low-priced cards. The decrease in build quality is not worth the minimal cost savings.

In the case that you really need to save money, purchase a memory card with a reduced capacity. They will be a tiny bit cheaper and you won’t need to be anxious about the SD card losing your images.

Keep in mind, SD card failures are uncommon. Through the years, I have only suffered from 2 cards fail. The two memory cards were pre-owned third-party cards that were included with the purchase of previously owned DSLRs.

Canon G10 SD Card Compatibility

The Canon G10 is limited to using SD memory cards. There are currently four different technical specs of Secure Digital (SD) memory cards. The benefit is that there is a boost in the read/write speeds and max capacity with the introduction of each updated standard.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

The Canon G10’s card reader can only read the original two SD card standards. SDUC or SDXC SD cards are not going to function correctly.

• Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the G10.
• Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB and are also compatible with the G10.
• Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
• Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.

Canon G10 Memory Card Full Error

Trying to use an SD card that has a storage capacity of 64GB or larger in the G10 will cause the camera to show an error.

Use an SD card that has a capacity of 32GB or less to resolve the error.

If you are using an SD memory card that is 32GB or smaller, and the card is not working, try to format the SD memory card while it is in the camera.

Memory Card Speed

Speed ratings for SD memory cards are determined by the sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the card is important in the event that many shots need to be written or read from the memory card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

The Class speed rating of an SD card is dependant on the sustained write speed of the card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the SD memory card can sustain a write speed of more than 2MB per second.

The top rating an SD card can receive is Class 10. There are memory cards that are a lot faster than 10MB/s. Those cards use other technologies, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), that have a different rating standards.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.

MultiMediaCard Compatibility

Siemens AG and SanDisk unveiled the MultiMediaCard technical standard in 1997. MMC cards appear as if they are a thinner SD card.

Only the earliest two generations of MMC cards will work in the Canon G10. Suitable memory cards will be branded as MMCplus or MMC. Later versions won’t function correctly with the Canon G10

It isn’t a wise choice to buy any MMC cards. Compatible MMC cards for the G10 are not at this time being manufactured. Because of that, they are overpriced as well as being quite challenging to find pre-owned.

Conclusion

Buy an SD memory card for the Canon G10 based on price. An expensive card isn’t going to improve performance. As long as it is a speed class 10 card, you will be fine. My recommendation is the PNY Elite 32GB SD memory card.
