Best PowerShot A720 IS SD Memory Card

The Canon A720 IS can use SD memory cards. 32GB is the largest capacity SD card that will work in the A720 IS.

MMCplus and MultiMediaCard (MMC) can also be used in the camera. However, they are no longer produced. If you have one, you can use it. If you don’t have one, do not buy one, they will cost more than an SD card.

SD memory cards described as SDUC or SDXC will not work correctly in the A720 IS. These cards will be 64GB or larger, so they can easily be avoided.

The SDHC format was announced in 2006. All 32GB cards that are currently being produced will have almost identical performance. You cannot go wrong buying the cheapest class 10 name brand card. At the time of writing this, the PNY Elite 32GB SD memory card has the best price.

Below are a few possibilities to choose between that will work correctly with the A720 IS. With all of the cards outlined below, you will not have to worry about memory card problems or poor capabilities.

Best SD Cards

Be sure to purchase a card from a company with a solid reputation, particularly Lexar or SanDisk. Cut-rate house brand names ought to be avoided.

Memory card issues, for example a complete loss of all of your photographs caused by file corruption, is more inclined to happen with bargain-priced cards. The decrease in quality is not worth the negligible cost savings.

The smart way to save a small amount of money is to get hold of a memory card with a reduced capacity. They usually are a tad lower in cost and you will not have to be concerned about the SD card losing your images.

Keep in mind, SD card issues are unlikely to occur. Just 2 cards have become unusable out of the considerable number I have owned over time. Age could have contributed to the failure, as the SD cards were bundled with previously owned cameras.

Canon A720 IS SD Card Compatibility

The Canon A720 IS is only capable of using SD memory cards. There are currently 4 separate specs of Secure Digital (SD) cards. Every new memory card standard boosts the read/write speeds and maximum capacity when compared to the previous specification.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

The card reader in the Canon A720 IS can only read the initial two SD card specifications. SDUC or SDXC SD cards are not going to be compatible.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the A720 IS.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB and are also compatible with the A720 IS.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.

Canon A720 IS Memory Card Full Error

SD Card Contacts

Trying to use a card that has a storage capacity of 64GB or larger in size in the A720 IS will cause the point and shoot camera to display an error message.

Use a memory card with a capacity of 32GB or less to prevent the problem.

If you have a memory card that is 32GB or smaller, and it is not working correctly, try to format the memory card in the camera.

Speed, Class, & Capacity

SD Card Image Capacity

Here is an estimate of how many large JPEGs you could expect to store on an SD card.

  • 4GB - 1920 images
  • 8GB - 3840 images
  • 16GB - 7680 images
  • 32GB - 15360 images

Memory Card Speed

The speed rating for SD cards is established by the sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the card is important for when many images need to be written or read from the SD memory card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

/best-canon-powershot-a720-is-sd-memory-card/sd-card-speed-class.jpg
SD Card Speed Class

The Class speed rating of an SD memory card is based on the sustained write speed of the SD card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the SD card can maintain a write speed of a minimum of 2MB per second.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s

The highest rating an SD memory card can get is Class 10. There are cards that are a lot faster than 10MB/s. Those cards use other technology, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), that have a separate rating standards.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.

MultiMediaCard Compatibility

In 1997, the MultiMediaCard specification was released by Siemens AG and SanDisk. MMC cards are similar in size to an SD card, but they are a bit slimmer.

The earliest 2 generations of MMC memory cards are going to function in the Canon A720 IS. Compatible cards will be labeled as MMC or MMCplus. Later versions won’t function correctly in the Canon A720 IS

It isn’t a wise choice to buy any MMC memory cards. No one is at this time manufacturing MMC cards that will function with the A720 IS. Because of this, they are not cheap and very hard to purchase pre-owned.

Conclusion

Buy an SD memory card for the Canon A720 IS based on price. An expensive card isn’t going to improve performance. As long as it is a speed class 10 card, you will be fine. My recommendation is the PNY Elite 32GB SD memory card.
