Best Canon PowerShot Digital Camera Memory Card

The Canon A630 requires SD memory cards. The maximum capacity SD card that is compatible with the A630 is 32GB. MultiMediaCards (MMC) can also be used.

SD memory cards that satisfy the SDXC or SDUC specifications will not work in the A630. These cards are easy to avoid as they have a storage capacity of 64GB or larger.

Want to skip the tech specs? Below is my suggestion on the SD card to get for the Canon A630:

SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I SDHC Memory Card

SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SDHC

  • Best value for the money.
  • Read speeds of up to 95MB/s; write speeds of up to 90MB/s.
  • Shock-proof, temperature-proof, waterproof, and x-ray proof.
  • UHS speed Class 3 (U3) and UHS video speed Class 30 (V30).

64GB or larger cards are not compatible with the camera.

Recommended A630 SD Cards

The examples below are SD memory cards that will function correctly with the A630. With all of the cards listed below, you won't have to stress out over slow capabilities or memory card problems.

SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I SDHC Memory Card

SanDisk Ultra UHS-I SDHC Memory Card

SanDisk Ultra 32GB SDHC UHS-I

Best SD Cards

SanDisk and Lexar both produce first-class memory cards. Avoid purchasing cards from low-priced generic brands.

Bargain-priced cards are much more likely to encounter data corruption, meaning you will lose all of your photos saved on the card. A minimal difference in price is not worth the reduction of build quality.

The smart way to save a little money is to find a memory card with a reduced capacity. They probably will be a bit lower in price and you will not have to be concerned about the SD card becoming corrupted.

Always bear in mind, SD card issues are very rare. Throughout the years, I have only experienced two cards fail on me. Both of the memory cards were previously owned third-party cards that were bundled along with the purchase of previously owned digital point & shoots.

Canon A630 SD Card Compatibility

4 separate specifications of Secure Digital (SD) memory cards are currently being manufactured. The Canon A630 can only use SD memory cards. Each new memory card technical spec raises the maximum storage capacity and transfer speeds when compared to the former standard.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

The card reader in the Canon A630 is only compatible with the first two SD card specs. SDUC or SDXC SD memory cards won't work.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the A630.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB and are also compatible with the A630.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.

Memory Card Full Error

Attempting to use an SD card that has a storage capacity of 64GB or larger in the A630 will result in the point and shoot camera to display an error message.

Get a card with a capacity of 32GB or smaller to prevent the error.

If you are using an SD memory card that is 32GB or smaller, and it is not working correctly, format the SD card in the camera.

Speed, Class, & Capacity

SD Card Image Capacity

Here is an estimate of the number of large JPEGs you will be able to store on an SD card.

  • 4GB - 1920 images
  • 8GB - 3840 images
  • 16GB - 7680 images
  • 32GB - 15360 images

Memory Card Speed

The speed rating for SD memory cards is determined by the sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the SD card is important in cases where many photographs need to be written or read from the SD card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
This is a Class 10 SD memory card as shown by the '10' inside of the 'C'

The Class speed rating of an SD card is determined by the sustained write speed of the SD card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the card can sustain a write speed of at minimum 2MB per second.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s

The best rating an SD card can obtain is Class 10. There are cards that are a good deal faster than 10MB/s. Those memory cards use other solutions, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), which have a different rating specification.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.

MultiMediaCard Compatibility

The MultiMediaCard specification was released in 1997 by SanDisk and Siemens AG. MMC cards are close in size to an SD memory card, but they are a bit slimmer.

You'll be limited to using only the first MMC cards in the Canon A630. The later generation MMCplus cards are not going to function correctly.

It isn't a smart idea to buy an MMC memory card. Compatible MMC cards for the A630 are not actively being manufactured. Hence, they are tough to come across pre-owned to purchase pre-owned and very expensive.

Conclusion

The best SD memory card for the Canon A630 is the SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SD Memory Card. However, the Lexar Professional 32GB SD Memory Card offers the best value.
