Best Canon PowerShot A610 SD Memory Cards

The Canon A610 requires SD memory cards. The maximum capacity SD card that can be used in the A610 is 2GB. MultiMediaCards (MMC) can also be used.
SD memory cards described as SDUC, SDXC, or SDHC won’t work properly in the A610. These cards will be 4GB or bigger, so they can easily be avoided.

Best SD Cards
Transcend and SanDisk both manufacture reliable memory cards. Avoid purchasing cards from bargain-priced no-name brands.
Memory card issues, for example a loss of all your photos because of file corruption, is more likely to occur with bargain-priced cards. A minuscule amount of decrease in price is not worth the reduction in build quality.
The smart way to save a small amount of money is to buy a memory card with a reduced capacity. They usually are a tiny bit lower in price and you won’t need to be worried about the SD card becoming corrupted.
Keep in mind, SD card problems are a very rare experience. Through the years, I have only had 2 cards fail on me. Both memory cards were used third party cards that were bundled along with the purchase of previously owned DSLRs.
Canon A610 SD Card Compatibility
The Canon A610 is only capable of using SD memory cards. There are currently four different specs of Secure Digital (SD) memory cards. Each updated memory card standard advances the transfer rates and max storage capacity when compared to the previous spec.
Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.
The Canon A610’s card reader will only work with the first SD card specification. SDUC, SDXC, or SDHC memory card cards are not going to work.
- Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the A610.
- Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB.
- Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
- Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.
Canon A610 Memory Card Full Error

Attempting to use a SD memory card that has a capacity of 4GB or larger in the A610 results in the digital camera to show an error.
Get a memory card which has a storage capacity of 2GB or less to fix the error.
If you have a memory card that is 2GB or smaller, and it is not working correctly, format the card in the camera.
Speed, Class, & Capacity
SD Card Image Capacity
The following is a quick estimate of the amount of large JPEGs you can expect to save on an SD card.
- 512MB - 240 images
- 1GB - 480 images
- 2GB - 960 images
Memory Card Speed
The speed rating for SD cards is determined by the sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the card is important when many images need to be written or read from the SD card.
SD Card Speed Class Rating

The Class speed rating of an SD card is related to the sustained write speed of the memory card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the memory card can sustain a write speed of more than 2MB per second.
- Class 2 - 2MB/s
- Class 4 - 4MB/s
- Class 6 - 6MB/s
- Class 8 - 8MB/s
- Class 10 - 10MB/s
The maximum rating a memory card can attain is Class 10. There are SD memory cards that are a lot faster than 10MB/s. Those cards use other solutions, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), which have a separate rating criteria.
Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.
