Best Canon PowerShot Digital Camera Memory Card

The Canon PowerShot A590 IS requires SD memory cards. 32GB is the largest capacity SD card that will work in the PowerShot A590 IS. MMCplus and MultiMediaCard (MMC) can also be used.

SD memory cards that meet the SDUC or SDXC specifications won't work properly in the PowerShot A590 IS. These cards will be At least 64GB or bigger, so they can easily be avoided.

Want to skip the tech specs? Here's my suggestion on the SD memory card to use with the Canon PowerShot A590 IS:

SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I SDHC Memory Card

  • Shock-proof, temperature-proof, waterproof, and x-ray proof.
  • UHS speed Class 3 (U3) and UHS video speed Class 30 (V30).

64GB or larger cards are not compatible with the camera.

Best SD Cards

SanDisk and Lexar both produce high-quality memory cards. Avoid purchasing cards from bargain-priced third-party brand names.

Memory card issues, including a complete loss of all your shots as a result of file corruption, is more likely to take place with cut-rate cards. The decrease in build quality is not worth the minimal savings.

Just buy a reduced capacity memory card for those who want to save a little money. They may be a tad less expensive and you won't need to stress out about the SD card having data failure.

Even then, SD card problems are infrequent. Throughout the years, I have only experienced a couple of cards fail on me. Both of the memory cards were pre-owned third party cards that were included with the purchase of pre-owned digital cameras.

Canon PowerShot A590 IS SD Card Compatibility

The Canon PowerShot A590 IS is limited to using SD memory cards. There are currently 4 different specifications of Secure Digital (SD) cards. Every new memory card specification raises the maximum storage capacity and transfer speeds when compared with the previous specification.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

Higher capacity memory cards can be used by the Canon Rebel T3i. In addition to that you can see the best Canon Rebel T3i lenses.

The Canon PowerShot A590 IS's card reader can only read the initial two SD card technical specs. SDXC or SDUC memory cards will not work.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the PowerShot A590 IS.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB and are also compatible with the PowerShot A590 IS.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.

Canon PowerShot A590 IS Memory Card Full Error

Attempting to use an SD card that has a capacity of 64GB or larger in size in the PowerShot A590 IS results in the camera to display an error message.

Get a memory card that has a capacity of 32GB or smaller to rectify the problem.

If you are using a memory card that has a storage capacity less than 32GB, and it is not functioning correctly, try to format the memory card while it is in the camera.

Speed, Class, & Capacity

SD Card Image Capacity

Here is an estimation of how many large JPEGs you will be able to keep on an SD memory card.

  • 4GB - 1920 images
  • 8GB - 3840 images
  • 16GB - 7680 images
  • 32GB - 15360 images

Memory Card Speed

Speed ratings for SD cards are established by sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the memory card is important when many photographs need to be written or read from the card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
This is a Class 10 SD memory card as shown by the '10' inside of the 'C'

The Class speed rating of an SD memory card is related to the sustained write speed of the card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the SD memory card can maintain a write speed of at minimum 2MB per second.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s

The highest rating a memory card can receive is Class 10. There are cards that are considerably faster than 10MB/s. Those cards use other technologies, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), which use a different rating specification.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.

MultiMediaCard Compatibility

SanDisk and Siemens AG introduced the MultiMediaCard standard in 1997. MMC cards appear as if they are a thinner SD card.

MMC memory cards that are going to function correctly in the Canon PowerShot A590 IS consist of the 1st two generations. That comprises of the first memory cards labeled as MMC and the 2nd gen MMCplus memory cards. Later generations will not work correctly in the Canon PowerShot A590 IS

It is not advisable to buy any MMC memory cards. Compatible MMC cards for the PowerShot A590 IS are not at this time being built. As a result, they are extremely hard to get used as well as not being cheap.

Conclusion

The best SD memory card for the Canon PowerShot A590 IS is the SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SD Memory Card. However, the Lexar Professional 32GB SD Memory Card offers the best value.
