Best Canon PowerShot Digital Camera Memory Card

The Canon PowerShot A1100 IS can use SD memory cards. The biggest capacity SD card that can be used in the PowerShot A1100 IS is 32GB. MultiMediaCards (MMC) and MMCplus cards can also be used in the camera.

SD memory cards that meet the SDXC or SDUC standards won't work in the PowerShot A1100 IS. These cards will be 64GB or larger, so they are simple to avoid.

Just want the best? Here is my recommendation on the SD memory card to use with the Canon PowerShot A1100 IS:

SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I SDHC Memory Card

SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SDHC

  • Best value for the money.
  • Read speeds of up to 95MB/s; write speeds of up to 90MB/s.
  • Shock-proof, temperature-proof, waterproof, and x-ray proof.
  • UHS speed Class 3 (U3) and UHS video speed Class 30 (V30).

64GB or larger cards are not compatible with the camera.

Best SD Cards

SanDisk and Lexar both produce first-class memory cards. Cut-rate third party brands ought to be avoided.

Memory card troubles, including a complete loss of all your photos due to file corruption, is more likely to happen with low-cost cards. The reduction in build quality is not worth the minimal amount of savings.

The smart way to save a little money is to just buy a memory card with a reduced capacity. They usually are slightly lower in price and you won't need to be concerned about the SD card losing your photos.

Always bear in mind, SD card problems are very infrequent. Over the years, I have only had a couple of cards become corrupted. Age could have added to the failure, as the SD cards were included with used digital cameras.

Canon PowerShot A1100 IS SD Card Compatibility

The Canon PowerShot A1100 IS is limited to using SD memory cards. There are four separate technical specs of Secure Digital (SD) cards. Each updated memory card spec improves the max capacity and read/write speeds when compared to the former specification.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

For a camera that can use larger capacity SD memory cards, the Canon Rebel T7i is an option. There are many great Canon Rebel T7i lenses especially for low light conditions and night photography.

The card reader in the Canon PowerShot A1100 IS is only compatible with the first and second SD card technical specs. SDUC or SDXC SD cards will not operate correctly.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the PowerShot A1100 IS.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB and are also compatible with the PowerShot A1100 IS.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.

Canon PowerShot A1100 IS Memory Card Full Error

Attempting to use a card that is 64GB or larger in the PowerShot A1100 IS will result in the digital camera to display an error message.

Use an SD card that has a storage capacity of 32GB or less to rectify the error.

If you attempting to use an SD memory card that is 32GB or smaller, and the card is not functioning correctly, format the card while it is in the camera.

Speed, Class, & Capacity

SD Card Image Capacity

Here is an estimate of the number of large JPEGs you could expect to store on an SD memory card.

  • 4GB - 1920 images
  • 8GB - 3840 images
  • 16GB - 7680 images
  • 32GB - 15360 images

Memory Card Speed

Speed ratings for SD cards are determined by the sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the SD memory card is important when many shots need to be written to the card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

Example of where to find SD Card Speed Class
This is a Class 10 SD memory card as shown by the '10' inside of the 'C'

The Class speed rating of an SD memory card is related to the sustained write speed of the SD memory card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the SD memory card can sustain a write speed of at least 2MB per second.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s

The top rating an SD card can receive is Class 10. There are SD cards that are significantly faster than 10MB/s. Those SD memory cards use other solutions, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), that have a separate rating standard.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.

MultiMediaCard Compatibility

In 1997, the MultiMediaCard specification was revealed by SanDisk and Siemens AG. MMC cards are comparable in dimensions to an SD memory card, but they are a little slimmer.

Only the original 2 generations of MMC cards are going to work in the Canon PowerShot A1100 IS. That comprises of the 1st memory cards branded as MMC and the 2nd gen MMCplus cards. Later versions will not work correctly with the Canon PowerShot A1100 IS

Steer clear of looking for an MMC memory card. Compatible MMC cards for the PowerShot A1100 IS are not actively being made. That's why, they are hard to get used as well as being overpriced.

Conclusion

The best SD memory card for the Canon PowerShot A1100 IS is the SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB SD Memory Card. However, the Lexar Professional 32GB SD Memory Card offers the best value.
