Best Canon PowerShot A1100 IS SD Memory Card

Best PowerShot A1100 IS SD Memory Card

The Canon A1100 IS needs SD memory cards. 32GB is the maximum capacity SD card that is compatible with the A1100 IS.

MultiMediaCards (MMC) and MMCplus cards can also be used. However, they are not manufactured anymore. If you have one, you can use it. If you do not have one, don’t buy one, they will be more expensive than an SD card.

SD memory cards described as SDXC or SDUC are not going to function correctly in the A1100 IS. These cards will be At least 64GB or bigger, so they can easily be avoided.

The SDHC format was announced in 2006. All 32GB cards that are currently being produced will have almost identical performance. You cannot go wrong buying the cheapest class 10 name brand card. At the time of writing this, the PNY Elite 32GB SD memory card has the best price.

Here are some choices to select from that can be used with the A1100 IS. With all of the cards listed below, you won’t have to stress out over memory card errors or reduced capabilities.

Best SD Cards

Reliable memory cards are manufacture by both Lexar and SanDisk. Avoid getting cards from inexpensive house brand names.

Memory card issues, such as a complete loss of all of your photos because of file corruption, is more probable to happen with cheap cards. A small amount of decrease in price is not worth the decrease in build quality.

Buying a smaller capacity memory card is a sensible way to save money. They should be a little lower in price and you won’t have to be concerned about the SD card losing your photographs.

Be aware that, SD card problems are very infrequent. Throughout the years, I have only suffered from 2 cards fail. Both memory cards were previously owned no-name cards that were bundled with the purchase of used cameras.

Canon A1100 IS SD Card Compatibility

four different technical specs of Secure Digital (SD) cards are currently being made. The Canon A1100 IS is limited to using SD memory cards. Every updated memory card standard raises the maximum capacity and transfer speeds when compared to the prior spec.

Secure Digital memory card readers are backward compatible. A card reader built into a digital camera that can use SDXC cards will also be able to use SDHC and SD memory cards.

The card reader in the Canon A1100 IS will only work with the original two SD card standards. SDXC or SDUC cards will not be compatible.

  • Secure Digital (SD) - These memory cards have a maximum capacity of 2GB and are compatible with the A1100 IS.
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4GB to 32GB and are also compatible with the A1100 IS.
  • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 64GB to 2TiB.
  • Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) - The capacity of these memory cards range from 4TiB to 128TiB.

Canon A1100 IS Memory Card Full Error

SD Card Contacts

Attempting to use an SD memory card that has a storage capacity of 64GB or larger in size in the A1100 IS will cause the camera to display an error.

Use a memory card that has a storage capacity of 32GB or smaller to avoid the error.

If you are using a memory card that has a storage capacity less than 32GB, and it is not working correctly, try to format the SD memory card while it is in the camera.

Speed, Class, & Capacity

SD Card Image Capacity

This is an estimate of the total quantity of large JPEGs you will be able to save on an SD memory card.

  • 4GB - 1920 images
  • 8GB - 3840 images
  • 16GB - 7680 images
  • 32GB - 15360 images

Memory Card Speed

The speed rating for SD memory cards is determined by the sequential read and write speeds. The speed of the card is important when many photographs need to be written to the memory card.

SD Card Speed Class Rating

SD Card Speed Class

The Class speed rating of an SD memory card is dependant on the sustained write speed of the SD memory card. A Class speed rating of 2 means that the memory card can maintain a write speed of at least 2MB per second.

  • Class 2 - 2MB/s
  • Class 4 - 4MB/s
  • Class 6 - 6MB/s
  • Class 8 - 8MB/s
  • Class 10 - 10MB/s

The highest rating a memory card can be given is Class 10. There are cards that are a good deal faster than 10MB/s. Those SD cards use other technologies, such as UHS (Ultra Highspeed Bus), which use a separate rating criteria.

Sustained write speeds of 2MB, 4MB, 6MB, or 8MB per second means the card has a speed class of 2, 4, 6, or 8. Cards that have write speeds of 10MB/s or faster are rated as Class 10.

MultiMediaCard Compatibility

The MultiMediaCard technical standard was unveiled in 1997 by Siemens AG and SanDisk. MMC cards are comparable in dimensions to an SD card, but they are a little thinner.

MMC cards that are going to work in the Canon A1100 IS consist of the first 2 generations. That consists of the first memory cards labled as MMC and the second gen MMCplus cards. Later generations will not function in the Canon A1100 IS

Steer clear of purchasing an MMC memory card. Manufacturers are not presently making MMC cards that will work with the A1100 IS. That’s why, they are tough to find used and unaffordable.

Buy an SD memory card for the Canon A1100 IS based on price. An expensive card isn’t going to improve performance. As long as it is a speed class 10 card, you will be fine. My recommendation is the PNY Elite 32GB SD memory card.
