Best Canon CompactFlash Memory Card

The maximum size Compact Flash memory card that can be used in the Canon EOS 7D is 137GB. Due to what is available, that means the largest card you can use is 128GB.

If you do not want to read explanations of specs, my CompactFlash card recommendation is:

SanDisk Extreme 64GB card

SanDisk Extreme 64GB CF Card

  • Read speeds up to 120MB/s.
  • Write speeds up to 85MB/s.
  • Water, x-ray, & shock proof.

Once you have a working CF card, expand your options with another lens. Check out the 8 Best Canon 7D lenses.

The best value CF card is likely to be either 64GB or 128GB. Smaller cards are going to be more expensive on a per GB of storage basis.

A professional card will not add a significant amount to the price. Pro cards have higher speeds and a better build quality.

Also, having a high-speed card will remove the need to buy another card if you upgrade your camera in the future.

Card Reader

UGREEN CF Card Reader

The UGREEN 4-in-1 card reader is what I have been using for my CompactFlash and legacy memory cards.

The UGREEN reader connects over USB 3.0. Transfer speeds over USB 3.0 will have higher transfer rates than what the Canon 7D is capable over USB.

The card reader also supports the following cards:

  • CompactFlash Cards
  • SD, SDHC, & SDXC Cards
  • Memory Stick (MS), MS Pro, MS PRO-HG, & MS XC DUO
  • MicroSD, Micro SDHC, & Micro SDXC Cards

Compact Flash Card Types

Compact Flash cards come in two physical sizes. They are called Type I or Type II.

The difference between the types of cards is the thickness. The width and length of the CF memory cards are the same.

  • Type I - 3.3mm thick
  • Type II - 5mm thick

The Type II standard is wider to give enough room for a Microdrive to be used in the Canon 70D. A Microdrive was just a compact mechanical harddrive.

Compact Flash cards had small capacities when they were initially introduced to the market. Microdrives were a solution that allowed for larger amounts of storage.

Microdrives are no longer manufactured. They dropped out of favor because they were mechanical. It was a matter of use or time until they failed.

Some Compact Flash adapters make use of the Type II specification. An adapter can make it possible to use a SD or MicroSD card in a Compact Flash slot.

Avoiding Card Read Errors

The most wide-spread problem with cameras that use CF cards is bent memory card slot pins. When a pin is bent, you may see any of the following errors:

  • Err 02
  • Err CF
  • No CF

If you want to avoid bent pins, never force a CF card into the Canon EOS 7D. The extra room that allows a Type II card to be used makes it possible for a CompactFlash card to become misaligned.

If the CF card will not easily slide into the slot, remove it and check the orientation of the card. Also, check to see if the card is damaged.

If there is no damage, carefully position the card and try inserting it again.
